Description	:	Johann Qualbert Wieland, locally known as John Q., was born on July 15, 1870, in Wiggenhausen bei Ailingen, Wuerttemberg, Germany, to Fidel and Agatha Wieland. He was educated in the elementary schools and later served in the army as a member of the Military Band (1890-1893). In March, 1897, he left his home in southern Germany and came to the U.S. A brother, Karl, accompanied him. Their journey carried them as far as Barnes County, ND, where the brothers went to work on farms to acquire knowledge of farming on the Dakota prairie, and to learn the ways of the new country. At age 27, he sat among grade school children at the Ashtabula School to learn English. In 1898, John and Karl bought 1,160 acres of land in Barnes County. In the late fall of 1899, John returned to Germany to be married on February 20, 1900, to Franziska Eberle. In the spring of 1900, he and his bride returned to Barnes County and homesteaded 100 acres. They moved to the first land they had purchased and built a home there. By 1904, the brothers had acquired a complete section along with the original homesteaded quarter. On July 17, 1905, Karl was killed by lightning while sitting in front of their barn. John continued to farm in partnership with his brother's widow, Maria, until she returned to Germany with four of her five children (Pauline, Frances, Mary, and Joseph). Karl, the oldest child stayed, returned to Germany, and then returned to the U.S. settling in Missouri. With the partnership dissolved, the entire property was put up at public auction and John repurchased the half section containing the farm buildings, another quarter and part of the livestock and farm equipment. He decided to add cattle to his operation, and, he purchased his first registered Hereford bull in 1914, as he had 40 head of cows at the time. He gained wide recognition as a stock breeder. On November 15, 1935, his dearly beloved Franziska died. As John Wieland advanced in years, he turned much of the farm management over to his sons. John was a deeply religious man. When he came to America, he carried the Catholic faith from his homeland. It was necessary to go 40 miles to Valley City to attend Mass. By 1901, the present St. Mary's parish was organized and John became the treasurer, a position he held until his death. He organized and directed the St. Mary's male choir and band and composed some four-voice hymns. He also was an active member of the Dazey band. Besides his church offices, he was school treasurer, Sibley Township supervisor for thirty continuous years, served as director of Barnes County Mutual Insurance Company and director of the First National Bank of Valley City, director of the Dazey Cooperative Store, director of the Barnes County Livestock Association, director of the North Dakota Beekeepers Association and President of the Farmers Union Elevator Company of Dazey. In 1929, he was chosen one of the five "Master Farmers" of North Dakota. His body lies in the cemetery at St. Mary's Church in the fertile soil he had grown to love during the forty-four years he lived in Barnes County. There were 8 children born to the union of John and Franziska Wieland: 1. The oldest son, William John, and his wife Mathilda (Berger) and their thirteen children (John, Roman, Herman, George, James, Joanne, Rita, Rose, Paul, Paulette, Linda, Donna, and Mark) took over the operation of St. Mary's farm. William died April 26, 1961. 2. Herman, the second son, preceded his parents in death on February 1, 1923, while a seminary student at St. John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota. 3. Hugo, the third son, and his wife Nell (Klink) and their two children (Jerome and Jeanette) farmed south of St. Mary's farm. 4. Joseph, the fourth son, graduated from St. John's University and was employed for a time in Washington, D.C. He died in Valley City, December 7, 1967. 5. Richard, the fifth son, and his wife Mary (Hagensen) and their thirteen children (Jean, Lloyd, Lawrence, Dennis, Lee, Gerald, Patricia, Ronald, Elaine, Maurice, Martin, Victor, and Beth) farmed the land north of St. Mary's farm. 6. Bernard, the sixth son, and his wife Florence (Busch) and their two adopted children (Thomas and Mary) farmed east of St. Mary's farm. 7. Cecelia (Rothenfluch) and her husband Raymond and their five children (Dianne, Mary, Charlene, Eileen, and Joan) lived at Mt. Angel, Oregon. 8. Hilda (Kirsch), the youngest child, also made her home in Mt. Angel, Oregon, with her husband, Aloysius "Alois", and their daughter, Susan, and adopted son, James. Source: www.familysearch.org
