She came to America in 1883, leaving behind her aged grand-mother, mother and brothers. On January 26, 1883 accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. William Watson who acted as witnesses, Conrad Harms and Johanna Erbst were united in marriage by a judge at Brownville, Nebraska. They lived with Mr. & Mrs. Watson until the small home was completed on their farm 3 miles west and 1/2 mile north of Auburn, where they lived until 1919, when they retired and moved to 2023 P. Street, Auburn, NE. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1933. Mr. Harms was president of the German Mutual Insurance Association of Nebraska, with headquarters in Nemaha County, from 1924 until 1936. He refused re-election at the age of 80, but did not retire from active work. At that age he painted 16 buildings on his farms. He was a great lover of trees and in his late years remarked that his greatest wish was to live all his life in America over again, thus he could break the sod and again plant his beloved trees. He was a great reader, especially of world history. Mrs. Harms was kindly woman who was devoted to her home and family. During her more active years she was a helpful friend and neighbor. She and her husband were loyal supporters of the Lutheran Church. Mr. & Mrs. Harms reared a large family and took into their home grand-daughter Frances Oestman when the mother (Sophia) died. Their children are: Sophia, Herman, Adolph, Julia, Conrad, Otto, Helene, Alma and Walter. Two more children died in early infancy. Mrs. Harms passed away at her home in Auburn October 17, 1941, at the age of 79 years, 10 months, and 29 days. Mr. Harms died at his old farm home (daughter Mrs. Alma Shanks) Dec. 7, 1941 at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 5 days. Mr. & Mrs. Harms were laid to rest in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Johnson, NE.
