Dirks Answered The Final Summons Yesterday Funeral Services Will Be Held Saturday At The Family Home At Two O'clock And At Zion Lutheran Church At Two-thirty. Mrs. Gerd J. Dirks, an aged and respected resident of Monticello, died at her home on Linden avenue yesterday afternoon a t 3 o'clock. She had been in failing health for a number of years and had been bedfast for four weeks. Heart complications and attendant illness caused the passing of Mrs. Dirks. She was, a native of Germany, and her maiden name was Johanna Maria Schellstadt. She was born at Upschort, Chris Wittmund, Ostfriesland, Germany, May 7, 1880. She was baptized June 9, 1860, and later March 21, 1875, she was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Repsholt, Germany. She was therefore a life long member of this church and took great interest in its activities. Marriage The marriage of Gerd J. Dirks and the subject of this sketch occurred March 28, 1890 at Repsholt. After living in that country for three years they emigrated to the United States and settled In Wayne township in March, 1893. They lived on farms in Wayne and later lived in Anamosa for a while. The last few years of their life have been spent on Linden avenue in Monticello. Three sons were born to this union, one of whom, John, died in infancy. The survivors are Harm J. Dirks of Center Junction, and Edward Dirks of Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Dirks is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Meta Otten and Mrs. Maria Dirks of Anamosa and by four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral Saturday Funeral services will be held next Saturday afternoon. Short services will be held at the family home in Monticello at 2 o'clock and thereafter at 2:30 o'clock at Zion Evangelical Lutheran church in Wayne township. Rev. F. H. Kehren, pastor of Zion church, will have charge of both services. Following the funeral service burial will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Although the friends of Mrs. Dirks were aware of the fact that she had been in failing health for some time and had recently been bedfast, her death came as a distinct shock. Tuesday, evening she was conscious and talked with the members of her family. She seemed to have improved slightly, but a turn for the worse came during the night and she became unconscious and remained so until the end. A host of friends In this vicinity will be quick to extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.
