Old Resident Died Monday Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at the home and later at the Reformed church for Mrs. John VanLoh Sr., who passed away at her home at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, December 1, 1952 from old age and heart complications. She was 88 years of age at the time of her death. Interment will be made in the East Friesland Presbyterian cemetery near Ackley. Mrs. VanLoh was born Sept. 17, 1864 in Freeport, Ogle county, Illinois. When three years of age she came to Grundy county, where she spent most of her entire life. On March 11, 1890, she was married to John VanLoh Sr. They lived on several farms in German township and in the year 1921 they moved to Wellsburg where the deceased had since made her home. Mr. VanLoh died on Feb. 4, 1947. Survivors are: five sons, Jacob Kurtzleben of Woden, Iowa; Jans VanLoh of Aston, Iowa; Louis of Wellsburg; Menno and John both of Ackley; two daughters, Mrs. Herbert Janssen of Parker, South Dakota and Mrs. Jake J. DeVries of Ackley. Twenty-eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren also survive. Preceding the deceased in death were the husband, on son Riebke VanLoh in 1951; two infant daughters, four sisters and four brothers. --Wellsburg Herald (Wellsburg, Iowa), 4 December 1952 --------------------------------- Funeral Services Held Thursday For Mrs. VanLoh Mrs. John VanLoh Sr., nee Johanna Riebkes, was born in Ogle County, Illinois, on Sept. 17, 1864 and passed away at her home on Dec. 1, 1952. Her age was 88 years, 2 months and 14 days. In 1866, when a child of two years of age, her parental family moved from the vicinity of Freeport, Illinois, to a farm in German township, near Wellsburg, in Grundy County. In this community she was raised in a Christian home, receiving her secular and religious training. On March 27, 1885, she was united in marriage to Harm Kurtzleben. This union was blest with two children: Jacob, and Jennie who passed on at the age of 3 months. This marriage was of short time in that the husband passed away in 1888 out of time into eternity. In the providence of God she again was united in marriage to John VanLoh on March 11, 1890. This union was blest with eight children, but one daughter died in infancy. This couple were privileged to be together for almost 57 years sharing blessings of joy as well as trials. Mr. and Mrs. VanLoh have lived on a few farms near Wellsburg in German township. In 1922 they moved to the town of Wellsburg for retirement for a twenty-five year period. After the passing of the husband, the deceased lived alone in her home for six years. She was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church and of the Ladies Aid and was able to be faithful in attendance to the services and the activities of the Ladies Aid Society. She was devoted to the Lord and the church. Reading the Bible and Christian literature was her joy and delight. The deceased was a woman of keen mind, a devoted mother to her children, and was vigorous and energetic, even in her old age. Two months ago her health failed due to complications of advanced age. Survivors are: Jacob Kurtzleben of Woden, Jans VanLoh of Ashton, Louis VanLoh of Wellsburg, Menno VanLoh of Ackley; Tena, Mrs. Herbert Janssen of Marion, South Dakota; Jennie, Mrs. Jake DeVries of Ackley; John VanLoh of Ackley. There are also 28 grandchildren, 18 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends who survive. Preceding the deceased in death were her husband John VanLoh on Feb. 14, 1947; her son Riebke VanLoh on Oct. 14, 1951 and one infant daughter. The deceased was the last of her generation in her parental family, all others having preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Dec. 4th at 12:30 p.m. at the home and later at the Reformed Church with Rev. Edw. Jurgens officiating.
