Description	:	John VanLoh, Sr. Passed Away Tuesday John VanLoh Sr., age 78, passed away about 2:30 Tuesday morning at his home in Wellsburg following a stroke suffered Monday night. He is survived by his aged widow, five sons, Jans, Riebke, Louis, Menno and John, 1 daughter Jennie, Mrs. Jake DeVries, 1 step-son, Jake Kurtzleben, Woden, Iowa, and 23 grandchildren. He was married on March 11, 1891 to Johanna Riebkes and they made their home on the farm until March 1921 when they moved to Wellsburg to make their home. In March 1940 they observed their golden wedding anniversary. Edward Jurgens, with burial in the Eastfriesland Presbyterian Cemetery. --The Wellsburg Herald (Wellsburg, Iowa), 6 February 1947, pg 1 ----------------------------------------------- Services Held Saturday For John VanLoh, Sr. Funeral services for John VanLoh, Sr. were held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1:00 o'clock at the home and later at the Wellsburg Reformed Church, with the pastor, Rev. Edw. Jurgens in charge. Music was furnished by the girl's sextette--Andeline Ruter, Mildred Kuper, Nedra Peters, Phyllis Ruter, Irene Knock, Thelma Okones, with Marcella Neessen as organist. Pallbearers were H. W. Ross, R. Lindaman, Sam Ross, R. W. Ross, Harm Okones, Jerry Spieker. Floral attendants were Lydia Spieker and Luella Beving. Interment was in the Eastfriesland Presbyterian church cemetery. Obituary John VanLoh was born on May 11, 1868 in Grundy county, near Wellsburg, Iowa, and passed away early last Tuesday morning on February 4, 1947, having reached the age of 78 years, 8 months, 24 days. The entire life of the deceased was spent in this community. On March 11, 1890, he was united in marriage to Johanna Riebkes. This union was blest with eight children. One infant daughter passed on before. The VanLoh family lived on several farms in German township until in the month of March, 1921, when the parents moved to Wellsburg where they have resided ever since. Early in his life Mr. VanLoh made confession of faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; upon this he was received as member of the Eastfriesland Presbyterian Church near Wellsburg, where he had served as Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. On the 29th of June 1928, his membership was transferred to the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Mr. VanLoh was usually blest with good health and loved to be active each day. Even the day before he passed away he made no complaints of ill health and was seen by many up town. On the evening of Feb. 3, a sudden physical distress came upon him. A physician was called for his aid. He had some relief afterwards, but finally in the morning the Lord took Him out of time into eternity. The essence of his expression of faith was Jesus is my Savior who would redeem him. Those who mourn his passing are his deeply bereaved wife, and five sons, Jans of Ashton, Iowa, Reibke of Aplington, Iowa, Louis, Menno, and John of Ackley, Iowa, two daughters, Tena, Mrs. Herbert Janssen of Parker, S.D., and Jennie, Mrs. Jake DeVries of Ackley, Iowa, one step-son, Jacob Kurtzleben of Woden, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Meint Huisman of Ackley, twenty-eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. --The Wellsburg Herald (Wellsburg, Iowa), 13 February 1947, pg 1 --http://iagenweb.org/boards/grundy/obituaries/index.cgi?read=596841 Contributor: KDB (49659419) • [email protected]
