Description	:	My great-great grandfather, Johannes "John" Schliesser, was the twelfth of nineteen children born to his parents, Johann George and Barbara (Stetter) Schliesser. The family immigrated to the United States in 1851 when John was eleven years old. Please see my note below about John's name. The family immigrated to the United States in 1851 when John was eleven years old. Please see my note below about John's name. John was in the Union army during the Civil War and fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. He contracted typhoid fever during the war that resulted in blindness in his left eye. On August 23, 1866, John married Mary "Elizabeth" Shumaker, daughter of Jonas and Esther Shumaker. John and Elizabeth had fourteen children: eight sons and six daughters. John was a farmer in Section 24 of Adams Township, Defiance Co., Ohio. (The nearest town was Okolona, Henry Co., Ohio.) *** On the subject of John's name, I (Martha Hicks) do not believe he had a middle name. None of the many records available for him--German or American--lists a middle name or middle initial for him. In the late 1940s, a family source (focused on his wife's family) published a family tree booklet that listed Johannes' middle name as Jonas, and this version of his name was widely distributed to relatives. To support his original grave marker, a stone base was installed, and his name was inscribed with the middle name Jonas. (It is difficult to see in the photo, but the original grave marker lists his name simply as "Johannes Schliesser" in the center of the cross.) Perhaps the name Jonas was mistakenly attributed to John as a result of the name Jonas being prominent in his wife's family. (His wife's father and grandfather were both named Jonas.) For a long time, I (Martha Hicks) suspected that John had no middle name; although, I wanted to believe that he did. I was finally convinced that he had no middle name when I recently located his German baptismal record that lists his given name simply as "Johannes." There is no evidence found in any record (church, military, marriage, pension, will, court, etc.) that he had a middle name. A book of tombstone inscriptions for Defiance County, Ohio, published in 2000, only recognizes the original grave marker that lists his name as "Johannes Schliesser."
