Description	:	John A. Ballantyne, sr., 93, Norfolk's oldest merchant, died Wednesday at his home in Norfolk. The funeral was held Saturday with burial in Prospect Hill cemetery. He was born April 4, 1853 at Gouverneur, New York to Archibald and Margaret (Scott) Ballantyne. He was the second oldest of 8 sons and daughters. He was the last of the brothers and sisters to be taken by death. He lived in New York until he was 19 years old . He then moved to Michigan for a year or two where he worked as a carpenter and foreman of a bridge construction... Read More	John A. Ballantyne, sr., 93, Norfolk's oldest merchant, died Wednesday at his home in Norfolk. The funeral was held Saturday with burial in Prospect Hill cemetery. He was born April 4, 1853 at Gouverneur, New York to Archibald and Margaret (Scott) Ballantyne. He was the second oldest of 8 sons and daughters. He was the last of the brothers and sisters to be taken by death. He lived in New York until he was 19 years old . He then moved to Michigan for a year or two where he worked as a carpenter and foreman of a bridge construction crew for a railway. After a brief visit in New York he came to Crofton, Nebraska in 1874 where a cousin lived. Later he went to Hartington where he worked as a contractor until he purchased a furniture store and mortuary. In 1886, he went to work for Edwards and Bradford Lumber Company as a yard manager. Three years later he was transferred to Osmond were he resided until 1900 when he moved to Norfolk as an auditor for the same company. He resigned that position in 1913. In 1914 he purchased a furniture store in Norfolk which he owned until his death. He was married in 1886 to Miss Lyda E. Paddock. She died Feb. 6, 1915. He was married in 1917 to Emma Himes. She died in February 1940. He was survived by 4 sons and 1 daughter: John A., jr., Byron, Mrs. Bernice Warner all at Norfolk; Robert at Omaha, Dr. George at Worcester, Mass.,; 11 grandchildren.
