Description	:	John A Bryant, aged 63, a well known resident of St Anthony, died at his home shortly after noon Monday after an illness of about two weeks. Death was due to heart disease, Mr Bryant having been confined to his bed for two weeks. Mr Bryant was a native of Lewis county, Kentucky, where he was born October 11, 1852. In 1856 he came to Iowa with his parents, and settled on a farm near St Anthony. On October 12, 1871, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary A Short, and moved to a farm one mile west of St Anthony, where he lived until 1901, when he moved to town and engaged in the insurance and real estate business. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs C L Keoppel, of St Anthony. He also leaves one sisters, Mrs N A Julian of Marshalltown, and two grandchildren, Mrs H E McConnel of Altoona and Clyde Keoppel of St Anthony. Mr Bryant was a member of the Methodist Protestant church at St Anthony and also a member of the Masonic fraternity, having a membership in the Pacific Lodge No. 469 at Zearing, and a member of the Odd Fellow's lodge. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Protestant church, Rev A Q Gharrett officiating. Burial was with Masonic honors, several members from Terrestrial Lodge No. 276, being in attendance. October 14, 1915 State Center Enterprise. The prosperity and substantial welfare of a town are in a large measure due to the enterprise and wise foresight of its business men. It is progressive, wide-awake men of affairs that make the real history of a community and their influence in shaping and directing its varied interests is difficult to estimate. John A. Bryant has long ranked as one of the leading men of affairs of St. Anthony and Liberty township, Marshall county, and it is to such enterprising spirits as he that the community is indebted for its continuous substantial growth and for the high position it occupies as a center of industrial activity. Mr. Bryant was born in Kentucky, October 11, 1852, and he is the son of Richard and Jane B. (Spence) Bryant, both natives of the old Blue Grass state, the father born on September 9, 1820, and the mother December 17th of that year. Daniel Bryant, the paternal grandfather of the subject, lived and died in Kentucky, to which state his grandfather came with the famous pioneer, Daniel Boone; so for many generations the Bryants have been conspicuous in the history of the "dark and bloody ground" country, and those of the present generation seem to have inherited many of their sterling attributes. In 1856 Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bryant came to Marshall county, Iowa, locating in what is now the town of St. Anthony, a part of which is on the one hundred and sixty-six acres they owned and developed from the wild prairie, and here spent the rest of their lives, the father dying in April, 1887, and the mother in September, 1895. They were the parents of eight children, two of whom are still living, five having died in infancy, and Mary Ann, who married a Mr. Teagar, died in 1898. Politically, the father was a Democrat and he and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. John A. Bryant was reared on the home farm, where, in early boyhood, he learned the meaning of hard work, attending the local schools during the winter months, receiving a good education. He took up farming for a life work and by hard work and good management has succeeded beyond the average farmer, now owning one of the choice farms of the county, consisting of two hundred and forty acres, which he has brought up to a high state of improvement and cultivation. In 1901 he moved to St. Anthony and has since been successfully engaged in the real estate business, also dealing in insurance. He owns two valuable residences and the property in which his office is located. Politically, he is a Democrat and has been more or less active in public affairs and has ably served in a number of local offices, being assessor of Liberty township for six years, also trustee for some time and he has been mayor of St. Anthony and a member of the council. In all public capacities he has discharged his duties most faithfully and honorably. Fraternally, he belongs to Pacific Lodge No. 469, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; also Tornado Lodge No. 637, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He and his wife are worthy members of the Methodist Protestant church. Mr. Bryant is a notary public. In October, 1871, Mr. Bryant was married to Mary A. Short, who was born in Decatur county, Indiana, December 20, 1854, the daughter of G.V. and Elizabeth (Gates) Short, who came to Marshall county, Iowa, in 1858 and settled in Liberty township and here his death occurred about 1901. His widow is now living in Toledo, Iowa. They were the parents of six children, an equal number of sons and daughters, five of whom are now living. Mr. and Mrs. Bryant have one adopted daughter, Edith Mabel, who is the wife of C.L. Koeppel, an enterprising farmer who is now operating the fine farm of the subject, mentioned above. They have two children, Alice Hazel and John Clyde.
