Just after eleven o'clock yesterday morning George W. Crooks opened his office window over McFarland's bank and called out these words to the writer as he was crossing the street. The startling news gave everyone a shock. In less than a minute it was passed from mouth to mouth and a feeling of sadness came over the community. The information to be obtained was very meager. A telegram from Rippey gave the bare announcement that Mr. Hull had gone to his farm in Union township on Monday afternoon, in apparently good health. Pete Hull lives on the farm. John A. Arose Tuesday, ate breakfast as usual, and seemed in his general health and spirits. Suddenly, at eight o'clock in the morning, without a moment's warning, he dropped down and expired. Further particulars we have not at this time. The farm is near Berkley, six miles from a railroad or telegraph station, and further particulars cannot be obtained before the return of the friends who started for the remains immediately on the receipt of the news. It is hard to write of John A. Hull as we feel. Cold type fails to do justice to the kindly man who has so suddenly passed to his eternal rest. In the almost 18 years that the writer has had control of this paper his pen has never been called upon to write of a death that touched the heart more near than this. The whole community mourns. Everyone seems to take the grief to his own heart and never did more generous sympathy go out to an afflicted family than is now extended to the bereaved. Community feels different than usual on such occasions. A man prominent as a lawyer, politician, writer, and old citizen has passed away, but no one seems to think of him this way. It is plain, homely, great hearted John A. Hull that is dead. The man that was the friend of everybody. Whose heart was big enough to beat in sympathy for any one's troubles, whose purse was always open to help the needy, whose house was the most hospitable one in the country, whose generosity was known all over the state. A throb of sympathy passes over community when his sudden death is thought of. The writer is unable to express his feelings. We have known John a. Hull intimately for 17 years and the pen trembles as we write these lines. A near and dear friend is gone. Anyone in this community will say the same. His great heart was as open to all as always were the doors of his house. John A. Hull was one of the pioneers of Boone County, settling in Boonsboro in 1854. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1831, and was consequently 57 years of age. After getting a common school education in the schools of Indiana he graduated at Asbury University, Greencastle. He took a law course, and read in the office of Col. Thompson, in Terre Haute. Afterward he practiced a short time in Tennessee, but soon removed to Iowa, settling in Boonsboro in 1854. From that day to this he has been identified with the history of Boone County. Here his early manhood was spent, before the days of railroads and telegraphs, enduring the hardships of pioneer life. He saw the country develop around him and the bare and dreary prairies blossom like a rose. There was no Boone when he came here and a few log huts was all there was of Boonsboro. His reminiscences of those early days were always interesting, either when told or written. Many an interesting sketch of Boone county history has been written by him and printed in these columns. Entering upon the practice of law he was soon recognized as the head of the local bar and one of the foremost lawyers of the state. In addition to his legal ability he was an excellent newspaper writer. He established the first newspaper of Boone County, somewhere about 1862, which he conducted for a number of years. Within the last 15 or 20 years he has written more or less for the local press, conducting the "Farmers Column" of this paper for years and frequently contributing sketches of early day times and agricultural matters to the other papers. He was also a contributor to the agricultural departments of the New York Tribune and Des Moines Register. He wrote for the press because he enjoyed it and his articles were always good reading. Politically John A. Hull was a democrat. He differed with the party on the liquor question, being a stern and unbending prohibitionist. The stand of the party on this point in Iowa did not please him, however, and for several years he did not actively participate in the councils of the party. He was married in 1854 to Margaret E. Wear, of East Tennessee, who has been the partner of his joys and sorrows for 34 years. If ever two people were made for each other it can be said these two were. The marriage was a singularly happy one and six children (5 daus and 1 son) live to bless the union and mourn their great loss. Particulars of the funeral cannot be given at the present writing. The undertaker and assistants left yesterday to go after the remains, which were to be brought home last night. The distance to the Berkley farm is 18 miles and the roads are very heavy from the rain of the night before. Also a carriage load of members of the bar went over. The bar association will probably take action in reference to the funeral. Thus passes away John A. Hull. Only a short time before, at the bar meeting when John C. Hall was presented with a cane, Mr. Hull spoke feeling as the oldest member of the bar present. He then said the time for him to go would soon come and the places of the older members would be taken by younger men. It seemed almost as if he had a premonition of his impending doom. The cause of his death was probably paralysis of the heart. He had just stepped out of the door into the front yard when stricken and was dead before he could be taken into the house.
