Moved with his parents, at the age of two years to Jefferson county, Iowa. At the age of 21 he enlisted in the Civil War and served three years during which time he fought in the Battles of Bull Run and Lookout Mountain. He was wounded during service but never taken a prisoner. During the entire three years he and his bunkmate went through together without ever being separated. He was married in 1866 to Mary Ellen Jay and to this union were born seven daughters and two sons, all but one daughter, who died in February 1917, are still living. He, with his wife and three children, moved to his homestead, four miles north of Beaver Crossing, in 1871, and here six more children came to cheer the home. In 1903 he moved to Beaver Crossing, where he resided until death claimed him. Mr. Knerr had not been well all winter but was up and around most of the time and on Thursday, March 14, he was up to the post office during the day, ate his supper and done his evening chores as usual, then lay down upon the couch to rest and silently breathed his life away as if asleep, only when his wife went to arouse him from his slumber did she realize he was resting and his soul had taken flight. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Myers at the family residence on Sunday, March 17, at which time all his children, but one son Orval, were present. The house and lawn were full of friends and neighbors who had come to pay their last respect to a man whose life has been one of honor, and the remains were laid to rest in the Beaver Crossing cemetery. His only brother, David Knerr of Stromsberg, a soldier grandson, Lieut. Clinton E. John of Camp Dodge, Iowa, were among those present at the funeral. The Times voice the sentiment of the community in extending sympathy to the bereaved family. The children are: Mrs. Effie Richmond and Mrs. Lizzie Jones of Litchfield, Mrs. Bertha John of Grand Island, Orval Knerr, Durango, Colorado, Mrs. Lena Holliger, Eureka, Ill., Howard Knerr, Zerelda Peterson and Mrs. Eliza Anderson of Beaver Crossing.
