The wound, though painful, was not considered dangerous at the time but brought on a complication of ills that caused his death. The following sketch of his life is contributed by a friend of the family: J.A. Rose was born July 28, 1848, at Riverside, Washington County, Iowa. He was therefore at his death within a few days of being 45 years of age. When about 20 years old he went to British America, where he spent ten years. He was there married at the town of Pembina. After marriage he and his wife lived at Bismarck, North Dakota, Little Falls, Minn., Riverside, Iowa, and the last ten years here at Boonsboro. He leaves his wife and four children to mourn his departure. Two children have already been laid in the city of the dead where his body shall find repose. He also leaves his mother, whose prayers ascended to heaven for him during his life and till death came. There are also two sisters and three brothers yet living of his mother's family of nine children. Mr. Rose was a hardworking man and a peaceable citizen. He took very little interest in political affairs but in matters pertaining to the public schools he was interested. He was a member of no society, either secret or open. He was much at home. His final sickness was short, being less than two weeks. From the first he spoke hopefully of recovering in a few days. Many of his friends hardly knew of his sickness and to those who were much with him his death was sudden and at the time unexpected. On the day he died, Friday, July 14, 1893, he sat up in bed and ate his dinner as usual. Very soon after that the fever which followed the inflammatory rheumatism with which he had been suffering, suddenly rose, went to his head and he became delirious. Doctors were summoned and they, with others assisting, did all possible to lower the fever and restore consciousness but everything failed. In a few hours all hope was gone. About 8 o'clock p.m. his spirit left the body and returned to God who gave it. Thus another life has ended. He is now beyond the reach of this world's influences but the mourning ones are not.
