Gemmill, Esq., at his residence near Pakenham, on the afternoon of Thursday 15th instant. Mr Gemmill had been unwell for a considerable time, but the disease which finally carried him off (enlargement of the liver) did not assume a serious aspect until within a few days previous to his death. Deceased was born on the 26th of Oct., 1816, in Glasgow, Scotland, where his parents were temporally residing. His father's family belonged to the Parish of Dunlop, in Ayrshire, where they have uninterruptedly held a small property for several hundred years. He accompanied his father to Canada and settled in Ramsay in 1821. In 1846 he married a daughter of the late Dr Cannon, formerly a surgeon in the Royal Navy, who settled in Canada on half pay. For some years he was engaged in mercantile pursuits, and in relinquishing them he came a contributor to the newspaper and periodical press, continuing so until his death. He was a man above average ability, and but for physical infirmities would doubtless have taken a leading part in the affairs of his country. Of a frank, genial and open heated disposition, and possessing a well stored mind, he was a companion one would readily appreciate. His remains were followed to their final resting place in the Old Kirk cemetery, Ramsay, on Monday last, by a very large concourse of his friends and acquaintances.
