John A. Gillaspy died on Tuesday, March 28, at his home one mile north of Leonard, Mo., after a brief illness. Funeral services were held in the Christian church at Leonard on Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Munyon and his remains were placed away in the Peoples cemetery southeast of Leonard. Mr. Gillaspy was 73 years old and is said to be the first white child born in Taylor township. He leaves a widow and two daughters, Mrs. James Hall and Mrs. J.W. McWilliams, both of Leonard. The subject of this sketch, now deceased, was one of the remarkable citizens of Shelby county because entwined about his life is much of the history of our county. He was, barring the aborigines, the first child born in what is now the territory of Taylor township. His father and mother, Lewis H. and Lucinda A. Gillaspy, moved from Shelbyville up Black Creek in January, 1838, into one of those old pioneer log buildings that cradled the splendid civilization of this county. John was born in the building that now stands 1/2 mile north of Leonard, marred with the passing years of nearly three quarters of a century, on Feb. 22, 1838, and lived within sight of this sacred old mansion until the day of his death, which occurred on March 28, 1911. His long, quiet, peaceful and contented life was spent within the shadow of his birthplace. His father was not only one of those sturdy, honest, hospitable old pioneers, but he was the nucleus of the Christian church in Shelby county, for in his home was the gospel first preached by the early pioneer preachers who visited Shelby county, a church being organized in the year 1842. Elders Jacob Creath and Livey Hatchet being among the early preachers, and out from this home went an influence that can only be measured by the omnicient mind at the end of time. John A. Gillaspy was converted and united with the Christian church under the preaching of Elder Livey Hatchet in the year 1857 and lived a consistent member until the day of his death. He was married to Miss Crecy Peoples on Dec. 2, 1858. Of this marriage only two children were born, Eldora A. McWilliams and Beatrice O. Hall, who now reside in Leonard. He also leaves behind one brother, William L. Gillaspy, and one sister, Sarah C. Gaines, the widow of Samuel P. Gaines, both of whom live in Leonard. His love of home and his contented frame of mind constrained from traveling or roaming about. He nor his life-long companion, with whom he lived for more than 52 years, ever traveled by railroad with the exception of their visit to St. Louis for the world's fair. The funeral was conducted by Elder Alfred Munyon of Marceline, MO., who preached a memorial discourse at the Christian church in Leonard on Wednesday at 2 pm. from Hebrews 13:8, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, to-day and forever." After the discourse the body was interred in the Peoples cemetery. Not only has a good, quiet citizen passed away, but a historical character as well. His beginning life, his long continuous residence in one community, his family ties unbroken by death for more than half a century, his contented frame of mind are features, characteristics and events that make this life remarkable and worthy of more than a passing notice.
