He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander (Sandy) McDowell who were well and favourably known in the early days of Maryborough, and spent his early days at Granville at which school he was educated. He sub- sequently commenced his apprentiship at Walkers Ltd. as a fitter in the year 1896, and with the exception of a few years he work ed there continuously until the time of his death. In 1918 he was appointed to the position of forman of the brass finishing shop. He was a very loyal member of the staff and many lads apprenticed to the firm are indebted to the deceased for the care and attention he gave them in their years of apprenticeship. Being highly skilled in every branch of his department all work in his care was given scrupulous attenion and of necessity he saw that his department took a share in the honours and any credit that was given to the firm by the excel lence of the work done in his section. He took a pride in every thing that was done, particularly in building a very fine staff of tradesmen. As proof of his pop clarity among his friends and fellow employees as many as possible of those who had been trained by him and worked with him attended his funeral. Walkers Ltd. have lost a man they could ill afford to lose. He was a born tradesmen. He knew how to handle men, and he also knew how to get the best out of them and furthermore he knew how apprentices should be trained and he saw to it that those apprentices in turn gave to Walkers Ltd. the best that was in them so that when they became finished tradesmen they could take their place in anyi engineering works in the Commonwealth. In his early days he was a great sportsman. He excelled in rowing and football. In the latter he first played with the Turkeys, then with the Vics, and finished with the Wallaroos in 1910. Being of big stature and powerful build he was an out standing forward and represented Maryborough in the days when Rugby football was at its keenest and best. He also gained representative honours in rowing, both as a member of the Wide Bay and Maryborough Rowing Clubs. He first started with the Wide Bay Club and gained a position in the first eight to represent Maryborough on the Hamilton Reach in the Brisbane River. He represented Maryborough at Brisbane, Bundaberg and Rockhampton. Many trophies came his way, and he was ever keen to give young oarsmen the benefit of his know ledge. He was a keen fisherman and was very fond of Boonooroo in the early years of his life, but latterly Pialba became a favourite place with him and he looked forward to spending many happy days at the Bay. He was a staunch Scotsman and very proud of his Scotch ancestry. He was a member of the MUIOOF and was a very staunch Mason. He was also a J.P. He was predecesed by his first wife, Emma, and one brother James. He leaves a sorrowing wife and four brothers, Alexander and Helbert, Sydney, Charles Bernard and Edward (Maryborough) and three sisters, Nellie (Sydney), Mrs.A.
