Funeral service 10:30 am Wed., Sept. 19, 2012 at Zion Congregational Church, burial Riverside Cemetery. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ John Amen, 95, of Sterling, Colo., passed away September 14, 2012, at Sterling Living Center in Sterling, Colo. He was born May 29, 1917, in Proctor, Colo., to John Amen and Katherine Margaret (Frick) Amen. At age one, he moved with the family to a farm three miles southwest of Sterling, Colo. He attended Springdale School for a year, continuing his education at Lincoln Elementary and completing his education in Sterling, Colo. He was baptized on September 30, 1917, in Proctor, Colo., and confirmed on March 20, 1932, at Congregational Church in Sterling, Colo. He has remained a devoted life member of the church, serving on the church board for 40 years. On May 3, 1936, he married Mary Schuppe. They were married 70 years at the time of Mary’s passing in 2006. They were the proud parents of two children, Donald and Norma. Together, John and Mary shared the farming operation beginning in 1938. They purchased the family farm in 1947 and he was able to remain on the farm for 94 years, a farm he truly loved! They raised alfalfa, sugar beets, corn and beans. One of his memorable times was being in the Great Western Sugar Company High 10 for 13 years. He also had a Grade A milking operation for 18 years. He was one of the first people to sign up with Highline Electric Association in 1939, receiving electricity in 1940. John served on the Springdale Ditch Board, Weed and Pest Control District and Sugar Beet Growers Association. He is survived by his daughter, Norma Weber and her husband Justin of Sterling, Colo.; daughter-in-law, Lucille Amen of Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren, Justing Weber and wife Julie, Todd Weber and significant other Michelle, Bonnie Roome and husband Bruce, Sheri John and husband Fred, Bryan Amen, Brad Amen and wife Holly; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Katherine Amen; his wife, Mary Amen; son, Donald Amen; brothers, Jake Amen and wife Mary, Joseph Amen, Harry Amen; sisters, Kathryne Beck and husband Frank, Esther Amen, Rachel Roth and husband Sylvester, Rose Lloyd and husband Barney. Memorial services were held September 19, 2012 at Zion Congregational Church. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Congregational Church or Hospice of the Plains.
