He joined the 14th Virginia Regiment, Company K in 1862, and served as first lieutenant and was honorably discharged and moved with his family to Missouri in 1864. He joined the 14th Virginia Regiment, Company K in 1862, and served as first lieutenant and was honorably discharged and moved with his family to Missouri in 1864. He was first married to Mary Moore, to this union were born 3 boys and one girl. His wife and one son passed away. He was then married to Pheoba M. Wise, to this union were born 6 children, 2 boys and 4 girls of which 2 boys and 3 girls are still living. He has lived in Scotland County since coming to Missouri and for several years has lived in Granger. A short time before his death, he and his wife went to spend the winter with their daughter, Mrs. Rachel Ellicott, of near Salem, where he was taken to his bed about 6 weeks ago. His death was caused from a cancer on his right hand and all that loving hands could do could not prolong his days. He passed peacefully to rest, Thursday morning, January 19th, 1905, at 6:00 a.m. at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 5 days. He was a member of the M. E. Church. The funeral was held at Union, Friday, and after the friends and loved ones viewed the remains one last time the body was laid to rest in the Union Cemetery.
