His oldest daughter, Lelia, now Mrs. Martin Stringfellow, was elected the first queen. He was the only son of Col. James Palmer and Marguerite Meredith, one sister, Maria Lee Smith, of Frederick survives. He was educated at St. Mary's College in Emmetsburg, while a student there he enlisted and fought the last two years of the War 61-65. Returning he finished his education and began the practice of Law in Kilmarnock. In 1870 he married Miss Louise Worthington of Frederick, who died at the early age of fifty. By this marriage there were thirteen children, ten of whom are now living, six sons and four daughters. This is another obituary from the December 18, 1929 issue of the Northern Neck News: John Palmer, 83, one of Northumberland County's four surviving Confederate Veterans, died Saturday at his home, Clifton, near Kilmarnock. and funeral services were conducted Monday at the Catholic Church in Kilmarnock. Mr. Palmer, who served throughout the War with Company D, Ninth Virginia Cavalry, was a member of one of the best known families in the county. He is survived by four sons and six daughters, as follows; Dr. Raymond Palmer, of Alvista; John Palmer, Jr.., of Baltimore; Charles Palmer, of Kilmarnock; Mrs. David Strang, of Flagstaff, AZ; Miss Agnes Palmer, Phoenix AZ; Mrs. Martin Stringfellow, of Charlottesville, and Mrs. Mrs. Alfred Hudnall, of Hardings. He was preceded in death of three other children.
