"Arnie" McCarter, a resident of Creighton for nearly 50 years and a former acting postmaster, died Thursday, March 25 at Lundberg Memorial Hospital at the age of 80. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the United Methodist church with the Rev. John Reid officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, where Masonic rites were conducted. Pallbearers were Leonard Klosner, Herbert Klosner, Lee George, Otto Balleweg, Leonard Clough and Al Wiegert. John Arnold McCarter was born Dec. 22, 1890 at Remsen, Ia., son of James B. and Alberta Goodman McCarter. He received his early schooling at Wisner and later at West Point, where he graduated. He lived around Wisner and West Point until the fall of 1921, when he came to Creighton, which was his home the rest of his life. He married Margaret L. Wulff on Mary 31, 1925 at Yankton, S.D. Two children were born to them. Mr. McCarter worked for 20 years at the former Rees and Wegner Garage. In 1942 he was employed at the Farmers Union Coop. Assn. service station. In 1949 he was named acting postmaster and served in that capacity until 1958. In 1957 he purchased the Treat Shop and with his wife and daughter operated it for nine years, when he sold it and retired. He is survived by his wife; a son, James of Omaha; a daughter, Joyce at home; two granddaughters; one brother, Kenneth of Omaha and four sisters, Mrs. Jess (Gladis) Burgman of Lincoln, Mrs. Charles (Edythe) Mertz and Mrs. Paul (Maude) Lorance of Emerson, Ia and Miss Cecil McCarter of Omaha.
