John Avery Bingham was born October 20,1900, the son of George B. and Mary E. ( Kenyon ) Bingham, on a farm near Burdette, Hand County, SD. Read More	John Avery Bingham, 97, formerly of the Wessington, SD area, died Thursday, March 5, 1998 at Weskota Manor in Wessington Springs, SD. John Avery Bingham was born October 20,1900, the son of George B. and Mary E. ( Kenyon ) Bingham, on a farm near Burdette, Hand County, SD. He grew up in the area, attended country school and worked on the farm. He later attended Sioux Falls Business College. He married Lala Hope Westenhaver, daughter of Jacob and Ethel (Duncan) Westenhaver, June 18, 1935. John sold Watkins products for a few years, then in 1941, he and Lala settled on a farm in Gilbert Twp., Hand County, SD, northwest of Wessington. This was their home until 1989, at which time they moved to an apartment in Wessington. In 1996, he and Lala became residents of Weskota Manor in Wessington Springs. Survivors include one daughter, Helen (Lyle) Scholz of Waxahachie, Texas; one son Gary Bingham of Black Hawk SD; eleven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary A. Thompson of Olympia, WA, Helen L. Hansen of Huron SD; brother Robert J. of Taylors, SC. He was proceded in death by his parents; his wife on October, 24, 1997, one son Larry; three brothers, Paul R., G. Wayne and Ross Q. Bingham. ========== *On Sunday, June 3, 1945, John and Lala went to Mitchell, SD to receive their adopted girls, Peggy 12, and Helen 11. This is what he told his brother, Ross, the following day and is recorded in a diary. Despite hours of research, the only mention of Peggy was in July of 1948 when the Go Getters 4H club was hosted at the home of Peggy and Helen Bingham. No mention of her in her sister Helen's wedding in 1958, parent's 25th anniversary in 1960, nor any family obits. I was told the girls were bio sisters, but that Peggy decided to leave the family. (???) Helen went on to college, married Lyle Scholz and they became missionaries and lived in New Guinea from 1962-1994, returning to live in Texas until their deaths. In 1946 or 1947 (?), John & Lala adopted bio brothers, Gary and Larry.
