Description	:	John Baptiste Orechia was born on June 18th, 1839, in Genoa, Italy. He had an uncle living in New York whose last name was Ciccone (Socony) and at age 12 stowed away aboard a ship. The sailors found him and took him to his uncle's house. He learned the jewelry trade, selling door to door. His uncle had him go to school to learn to write and speak English. Read More	John Baptiste Orechia was born on June 18th, 1839, in Genoa, Italy. He had an uncle living in New York whose last name was Ciccone (Socony) and at age 12 stowed away aboard a ship. When John came to America people had problems pronouncing his name. Orechia in English means EARS. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 18,1864 in Boston, Mass. He served as 2nd class fireman on the USS Ohio til June 4,1864 and then on the USS Santiago de Cuba until May 17, 1865, when he was honourably discharged from the United States Navy. John became a photographer after the war and decided to go back to Italy via Halifax, Nova Scotia. While there, in Nova Scotia, he met a young widow, Mary Catherine "Kate" (nee Lively) O'Connell, who was born in England in 1837. Kate had married Edward O'Connell in 1859 and they lived in Windsor, Nova Scotia. They had two children, James O'Connell, born August 18,1860 and Mary O'Connell who was born February 28, 1863, a few weeks after her father was killed on February 9, 1863, at age 30. He worked on the W&A Railroad and was standing on top of a box car when it went under Coran's Bridge in Windsor and is buried in the Roman Catholic cemetary in Windsor. John B.Orechia and Mary Catherine Lively O'Connell were married on March 12,1867 in Trinity Catholic Church, Halifax, by Rev.Cochran. Their children were: Bessie, born November 18,1867, John (Jack) Anthony born October 26,1869 and Arthur Jacob, born May 19,1871. Grampa Jack was born in Halifax and we assume the others were too. Mary was disinherited when she married O'Connell but her son went to England to claim his inheirtance . Her daughter, Mary, went to Mass. And married a man named Talbot and lived in Weymouth Mass. They had three children, Blanche, Ralph and Alice. Ralph was a WWI aviation hero. He won many awards but died in action. A Navy boat, a school and a street were named after him. Before telephone numbers were all numbers they had a Talbot Exchange in Weymouth. I went to a cite and found photos of the Santiago de Cuba. John B. Received a pension of $8.00 a month from back injury while serving. Wife Mary received it until her death on March 4,1910. In the late 1950's I corresponded with Great Uncle Arthur and after with his daughter Reta (Mrs.Clarence Withrow) of Shubenacadie Nova Scotia. They had no children. I believe her siblings were: Bessie who had 8 c hildren and died in 1945, Bill and George in the USA and Joseph of whom I know nothing. He loved to tell yarns (stories) and I always thought he said the B in Great Grandfather John's name was for Bartholemew. But cousin Dorothy says Baptiste and he was born on or about St.John the Baptiste Day.
