Description	:	Born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England to Allen and Marthe (Cocking) Balderston. He immigrated to the United States in 1882 with his parents, sister and two brothers. Stayed in Austin, Nevada for a while before moving to El Dorado County in 1886 where he lived the remainder of his life. He married Florence "Fannie" Bragg on Dec 22 1898. They had eleven children together. Fannie and their baby boy both died in the 1920 flu epidemic. He married his second wife, Huldah Williams, in 1928. Mountain Democrat (Placerville, CA), Thurs, Aug 24, 1944, Page 1: "JOHN BALDERSTON CALLED BY DEATH Services for North Side Merchant Will be Sunday Afternoon At Georgetown John Balderston, 76, for approximately thirty years the keeper of the store at Balderston's Station, seven miles east of Georgetown, passed away late Wednesday evening at his residence. The funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Methodist Church, in Georgetown it is announced by Memory Chapel. Mr. Balderston's death was a sudden shock to the family and to his many friends. He had closed his store as usual on Wednesday evening and, as was his custom, worked after dinner in his garden. Retiring about ten o'clock, he became ill later a a doctor was called from Auburn. Mr. Balderston passed away before the doctor arrived and death is attributed to a heart attack. The deceased was born in England and came to America when he was fourteen years of age and spent about fifteen years in Nevada. When about thirty years of age he came to this county and purchased an orchard near Volcanoville and was also employed in Mining. Later he was a contract mail carrier and about thirty years ago acquired the business he had since operated. Mr. Balderston is survived by his wife and by nine children, who are Mrs. Ellen E. Bray, John Henry, Allen T., George, Earl M., and four sons who are in overseas military service, Ted M., Harry L., James and Edward L. Balderston. A brother, George Balderston, of Lotus also survives him." Mountain Democrat (Placerville, CA), Thursday, August 31, 1944, Page 3: "GEORGETOWN NEWS Many relatives and friends gathered Sunday afternoon at the M. W. Church to attend the funeral services for John Balderston, Aged 76 years. A native of England, Mr. Balderston came to the United States with his parents when he was 12. The family first settled in Nevada and later moved to Georgetown. In 1898 he established his store and stage station which bears his name and was known throughout the county as a happy, genial person. Johnnie will be missed. He was married to his first wife on December 22, 1898 and eleven children were born to them. His wife Fannie and infant son died during the flu epidemic in 1920. In 1928 he was married to his present devoted wife. He leaves to mourn his sudden death his wife, Hilda Balderston, and sons, Allen, George and Earl, all of Georgetown; Jack of Stockton, Pfc. Ted Balderston and S. Sgt. James Balderston, in England; S. Sgt Harry Balderston, New Guinea: and Edward(Babe) Balderston, Fleet P.O., San Francisco. One daughter, Mrs. Ellen Bray, of Roseville; two grandsons, Chars and Chester Bushnell, in the Army Overseas, Sons of a daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Bushnell, who died in 1931, and three great grandchildren Graveside services were at the family plot in the Georgetown Cemetery. Relatives from a distance who came to attend the funeral included Mr. And Mrs. Al Roberts and son Ernie, of Oakland; Mrs. Hattie Gregory and daughter Ruth of Placerville; Mrs. Irma Lawyer of Uncle Tom's, and Mrs. Ethel Todd of Lotus."
