Description	:	Born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England to Richard and Hannah Cocking. There she married Allen Balderston about 1862 and had five children: Sarah, John, Charlotte, James and George. On March 6, 1882, the family, except Sarah who was married at that time, landed in New York, having sailed over on the ship Egypt. With them was Martha's mother, Hannah. They settled in Austin, Lander County, Nevada for a while before comeing to El Dorado County, California about 1886 and settleing in the Lotus area. There she married Allen Balderston about 1862 and had five children: Sarah, John, Charlotte, James and George. On March 6, 1882, the family, except Sarah who was married at that time, landed in New York, having sailed over on the ship Egypt. With them was Martha's mother, Hannah. They settled in Austin, Lander County, Nevada for a while before comeing to El Dorado County, California about 1886 and settleing in the Lotus area. Sometime between 1882 and 1900, Allen passes away leaving Martha a widow, she marries Jacob Ebberlin in April 1887 and then on 5 Dec 1889, marries John Colby Hayden, who dies in 1896 leaving her a widow again. MARTHA HAYDEN On last Wednesday Mrs. Martha Hayden died at her home at Lotus, and her remains were interred in the cemetery there Friday afternoon, Rev. W. Thatcher of Georgetown officiating. The deceased came to this county in 1886 from Austin, Nevada, and leaves a sister, Mrs. Annie Elgey of Coloma, three sons, John Balderston of Georgetown, James Balderston of Coloma, and George Balderston of Orangevale, one daughter, Mrs. J. C. Turnbeaugh of Lotus, fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Many friends mourn the death of a kind-hearted woman and neighbor." MARTHA HAYDEN IS LAID TO REST Again a shadow of gloom has been cast over our community by the death of Mrs. Martha Hayden who died in Lotus at the residence of her only daughter, Mrs. James Turnbeaugh on Wednesday afternoon, January 6th. Mrs. Hayden has been ailing for the past year having some what heart trouble. On April 27th 1862, Mrs. Hayden was Married to Allen Balderston in their native state, England, to which six children were born tow of which died before leaving their native land. In 1882 Mr. Balderston and wife together with their four children left for the United States arriving in Austin, Lander Co., Nevada, and four years later came to El Dorado county, California. In 1883 Mr. Balderston returned to his native land leaving his wife and four children in Nevada, being home one year and his death occurred in 1884, leaving his wife with four small children to care for. In April 188, Mrs. Hayden married Jacob Ebberlin, who departed his life in Sept. 1889. On Dec. 5, 1889 she married John C. Hayden and lived for some years on what is known as Works' ranch some seven miles above Georgetown. In 1896 her last husband died and she sold her property above Georgetown and moved to Coloma where she purchased a comfortable home for her and her oldest son, James, who has been taking care of his mother up to the time of her death. Mrs. Hayden would have reached the advanced age of 73 years had she lived three days longer. Deceased leaves to mourn her loss one married daughter and one son and two sons single besides grand children and great grand children. Also one only sister, Mrs. Annie Elgy at Coloma. She was an honorable member of Sutter Mill Lodge of Rebekahs, coming in a few hours after that lodge was instituted. The funeral took place from her daughter's residence here on Friday last and was largely attended considering the wet weather, Rev. Willis Thatcher of Georgetown officiated and on account of stormy weather there was a small attendance of Rebekahs and their services were omitted. Those who acted as pall bearers were: Robt. Johnson, Henry Gallagher, Fred Thomas of Coloma, Frank Orelli, Chas. Leonardi and Chas. Rasmusson of Lotus who laid her to rest beside her sister and grand daughter in the Lotus cemetery."
