Description	:	Jack B. Dawson, age 90, of Huron, died Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at SunQuest HealthCare Center. His funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, January 21st, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Holland officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation will be Monday, January 20, from 1 to 8 PM, at Kuhler Funeral Home. Jack Barney Dawson was born December 24, 1923, at Elma, Washington, to Barney and Stella (Dilleshaw) Dawson. He grew up at Elma and graduated from Elma High School. Jack enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII. He was assigned to the USS Density at its commissioning. Jack served three years on the USS Density as the only ship's baker and was responsible for the commissary department. The Density was the flagship of a division of mine sweepers in the south Pacific and swept mines before each invasion. It was also a submarine chaser. The Density received commendations for its rescue efforts when two of her sister ships were sunk during the invasion of Okinawa. The ship also received commendations for the hundreds of mines it swept and suicide planes it shot down. Jack was proud of the ship's record and his ship mates. He had attended their reunions every three years after his ship was decommissioned in 1946. On April 21, 1946, Jack was honorably discharged and returned to South Dakota to work for his uncle in Astoria. On August 26, 1947, Jack married Irma K. Hofer at Elma,Washington. In 1948, they moved to Alpena, South Dakota and operated a cafe and later worked for Pete Lund. In 1952, they moved to Huron, and Jack worked for Old Home Bread as a route salesman for the Metz Baking Company. They later moved to Mitchell; Omaha, Nebraska, Rapid City, Huron, and Watertown, all the time working for Old Home Bread.Â He retired as plant manager at Watertown in 1989, having worked for Old Home Bread for 37 years. They then returned to Huron. Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Kiwanis Club, the Huron V.F.W., American Legion, the Elks, the Chamber of Commerce, and a former member of the South Dakota Industrial Board. He also worked with the South Dakota State Fair as a bread judge and with the bread program for a number of years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed fishing in his "spare time"€. Jack loved his time with his wife and fishing partner, his daughter and grandchildren. He enjoyed the humor of his pickup license plate "We Fish". He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Irma; and grandson-in-law, Mike Harden. Jack is survived by his one daughter, Sharon Dawson, of Omaha, Nebraska; one granddaughter, Robin Harden, of Omaha, Nebraska; one great granddaughter, Heather Harden; and one sister, Sister Peggy Dawson Mm, of Maryknoll, New York. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dorothy Morgan provided first name as John, and Jack as nickname. 12-12-2015
