Read More	Additional information and tombstone photo provided by Gary Hostert On May 1st, 2017 - Frontier Newspaper, O’Neill, Nebraska, March 24th, 1887 – “A SAD SUMMONS – Died, March 17, 1887, at 9:35 p.m. at the Arcade-House in O’Neill; Mr. John Bell, aged 49 years, late of Maxwell, Iowa. He was born in Porter County Indiana and lived there until the fall of 1884, when he moved to Polk County, Iowa. He moved to Holt County, Nebraska, March 12, 1887. He served three years in the War of the Rebellion in the Fifth Indiana Battery and was wounded in the battle of Chickamauga. The circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Bell are very distressing and sad in the extreme. He came here as was stated, March 12, and was taken sick almost immediately upon his arrival from which he never recovered. His death was caused by a wound received twenty five years ago. He leaves a wife and six small children, besides two nephews, one of whom is married, to mourn his untimely demise. The funeral services were conducted at the Arcade-House Friday afternoon and the G. A. R. post escorted the remains to the burying ground and performed the last sad rites over the deceased. The family will remove to the South Fork County, having previously rented a farm there for this season. Mr. L. H. Bell, a nephew of the deceased, will also remove to that part of the county, having rented C. A. Moore’s farm. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the people of O’Neill and all with whom the circumstances are known. The deceased was well known to John Trigg of our place, who served in the same battery during the war. John speaks in the highest terms of praise of Mr. Bell and informs us that he saw him when he was wounded and that the man was all grit. He was leader of the battery’s prayer meeting, which met every week, and was a devout Christian man during his life. It is but a short time since he bade farewell to his friends in this vicinity and started west in good health and high spirits, with a bright prospect of securing a home for himself and family. But how soon is everything changed and sorrow and bereavement take the place of pleasure. His family left here last Monday Mar. 14, and only reached him two days before his death." M., of urinary disease, Mr. John Bell, formerly of near Maxwell, Iowa, late of Holt Co., Neb. Mr. Bell was born in Indiana, moved to Iowa in the fall of '84; moved to Nebraska, March 12 '87. Just one week from the day he started he was a corpse. He served three years in the war of the Rebellion was wounded in the battle of Chickamanga. He leaves a wife and six children, the oldest being fourteen years old, to mourn their loss. They have the sympathy of the entire community. Lewis H. Bell."
