Description	:	John Bennett Smith, 81, Beaver Crossing, died October 14, 1998, at Beaver Crossing. He was born June 22, 1917, at Hawley, Minnesota, to Guy L. and Myrtle (Collier) Smith. He attended country school Districts 38 and 62 near Beaver Crossing and Beaver Crossing Public School. Read More	John Bennett Smith, 81, Beaver Crossing, died October 14, 1998, at Beaver Crossing. He was born June 22, 1917, at Hawley, Minnesota, to Guy L. and Myrtle (Collier) Smith. He attended country school Districts 38 and 62 near Beaver Crossing and Beaver Crossing Public School. In September 1937 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed 20 years of service as a career officer. He began his Navy career on the U.S.S. California and was at Pearl Harbor and 14 other battles in the South Pacific. He trained recruits in San Diego, California, and then served on the U.S.S. Maddox during the Korean Conflict. He was a recruiting officer in Aberdeen, S.D. and Danville, Illinois. He completed his Navy service on the LST 1032 in September of 1957. Mr. Smith then attended Dakota Wesleyan, Mitchell, S.D., and earned a teaching degree. He taught high school business, journalism, and drama at Emery, Plankington and Grant/Duell, all in South Dakota, for 22 years. On June 27, 1943, he married Mary Juanita "Nita" Miley at Seattle, Washington. He and his wife, Nita, retired and returned to Beaver Crossing in 1983 where he was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Holmes Post 178, Flowing Well Grange 396 and was on the village board. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite in Aberdeen, S.D. Mr. Smith was also a member of the South Dakota Teachers Association. Mr. Smith was a master gunsmith and a wood carver. He and his wife developed a bird sanctuary in their backyard and enjoyed sitting and watching the many birds that came to feast. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Charlotte Christensen and Ethel Flanigan, and two brothers, Ross C. and Lloyd Smith. Survivors include his wife, Nita Smith, Beaver Crossing; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis C. and Jean Smith, Lititz, Pa.; brother and sister-in-law, George and Myrtle Smith, Denton; three grandchildren ; nieces and nephews. Funeral services were October 17 at the United Methodist Church in Beaver Crossing with the Rev. Kelley Karges officiating. Burial was in Beaver Crossing Cemetery, with military services by American Legion Holmes Post 178. The Navy Honor Guard served as pallbearers at the cemetery, presenting the flag to wife, Nita Smith.
