Mr. Berns, with his daughter, Mary Elizabeth, were on their way to visit his mother here when the accident occurred. The daughter was driving the car, and apparently lost control. Mr. Berns died shortly after the smash-up, and Mary Elizabeth was taken to the Postville hospital for treatment of severe facial injured. Mr. Berns was a native of Guttenberg, and had farmed near West Union for the past 30 years. Besides his mother, he has a brother, Leo Berns, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Nieland, living here. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Postville Herald, IA, Thursday, March 3, 1938, P6, C1 Fatal Crash at Luana Viaduct John Berns, 51, a farmer from near West Union, was instantly killed about 8:30 Sunday morning when his daughter, Mary Elizabeth, lost control of the car just west of Luana and crashed into a pillar of the Milwaukee railway viaduct. The daughter was picked up unconscious and taken to the hospital at Postville, but has since revived and seems to be getting along satisfactorily. They were enroute to Guttenberg to visit his mother. Mr. Berns is survived by his widow and another daughter.
