Berns, 81, Monday Night FUNERAL SERVICES HELD THIS MORNING IN ST MARY'S CHURCH Peter J. Berns died Monday night in his home here. He was in his eighty-second year. Death followed a long illness. Mr. Berns was a life long resident of Clayton county, having been born on a farm in Jefferson township Feb. 27, 1855. He married Miss Josephine Schmelzer of Guttenberg Feb. 6, 1877. They were to celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary in but a little more than a month. After marriage, the Bernses settled on a farm in Garnavillo township, later moving into Garnavillo. They came to Guttenberg in March of 1918. Mr. Berns was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and of the Holy Name Society. He is survived by his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Nieland of Guttenberg, Mrs. Christina Voss of Guttenberg, Mrs. Frances Keppler of Monona, Mrs. Rose Hinsenbrock of West Union, and Miss Lois Berns (sic/Louis Henry Berns) of Garnavillo township; four sons, Otto Berns of Danville, Penna., John Berns of West Union, Anton Berns of Garnavillo township, and Leo Berns of Guttenberg; a brother, Herman Berns of Garnavillo; 37 grand children, and 3 great grand children. Funeral services were held this morning in St. Mary's church. The Rev. J. A. Dupont officiated. The Rev. Henry Scharphoff was in charge at the services at burial in St. Joseph's cemetery in Garnavillo. +++ Clayton County Register, IA, Wednesday, January 6, 1937, pg. 4, col. 1 Peter J. Berns Funeral services for Peter J. Berns, life-long resident of Clayton county, were conducted by the Rev. J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church here Thursday morning, after which the body was taken to Garnavillo and laid to rest in St. Joseph's cemetery there. Rev. H. Sharphoff of Garnavillo officiated at the grave. Mr. Berns died at his home in Guttenberg the evening of December 28, 1936, at 10:30 o'clock, at the age of 81 years, ten months and one day. He had been ill for some time previous to his death. Mr. Berns was born on a farm in Jefferson township, Clayton county, Iowa, on Feb. 27, 1855. On Feb. 6, 1877, he was married here to Josephine Schmelzer, after which the couple settled on a farm in Garnavillo township, later moving to Garnavillo. They came to Guttenberg March 11, 1918. Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters: Mrs. Mary Nieland and Mrs. Christina Voss, both of Guttenberg, Mrs. Frances Keppler of Monona, and Mrs. Rose Hinsenbrock of West Union; five sons, Otto of Danville, Pa., John of West Union, Anton and Louis, both of Garnavillo township, and Leo of Guttenberg; 37 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Herman Berns, of Garnavillo. The funeral was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near. Mr. Berns was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic church and the Holy Name society, of Guttenberg.
