WAUGH, John Blair, 71, of Galax , passed away on Monday, March 17, 1997, at Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C. He was the son of Dan Blair and Hazel Phipps Waugh, and a graduate of Galax High School, and the McCallie School, Chattanooga, Tenn.
After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, he attended Duke University, where he graduated Cum Laude in 1949. WAUGH, John Blair, 71, of Galax , passed away on Monday, March 17, 1997, at Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C. He was the son of Dan Blair and Hazel Phipps Waugh, and a graduate of Galax High School, and the McCallie School, Chattanooga, Tenn.
After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, he attended Duke University, where he graduated Cum Laude in 1949. A member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, he served on the Fraternity Council and the Duke Golf Team. He graduated from Harvard Business School in 1951. He was in the retail business at Dan B. Waugh & Company, Inc. until 1973. He also served as president of the Galax Rotary Club. For many years he served as Director at First National, Dominion, and now First Union Bank. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Galax Elks Club, and in 1996 was given a life membership for his service to the club.
He is survived by his wife, Nancee Steelman Waugh; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura Jeanne and Roland Evans Walters Jr. of Blacksburg; a son and daughter-in-law, John Barron and Mary Paul Waugh of Wake Forest, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles Richard and Carolyn Harris Waugh of Sebring, Fla.; and a beloved aunt, Miss Celene Phipps of Independence. Three grandchildren also survive, Brett Ashton Walters, Evan Blair Walters, and Ethan Hunter Walters of Blacksburg.
Funeral services for Mr. Waugh will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Nation officiating. Burial will follow in the Felts Memorial Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. However, family and friends may call at the home on 208 Country Club Lane at any time. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the J. Blair Waugh Foundation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department, Duke University, P.O. Box 90581, Durham, N.C. 27708-0581. Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
