Description	:	J. B. McKown The funeral of J. B. McKown, an old soldier and former well known citizen of the East end, was held last Sunday afternoon at the Emerson Presbyterian church. Interment took place at the Emerson cemetery where several children of the deceased are buried; Mr. McKown died on Thursday at Bancroft, Neb., where he had been residing of late and where several of his children reside. He was 66 years old, having been born August 20, 1842 at Elizabethtown, Penn. He was postmaster at Hastings for seven years and also resided for a time at Emerson and Strahan. Read More	J. B. He is survived by a wife and nine children. Roy McKown, a son, resides West of Malvern. Six of his sons acted as pall bearers at the funeral. Mills County Tribune, Tuesday, November 10, 1908 The sad news reached , here Friday of the death of J. B. McKown, a former well known resident of this county, at his house in Cumings County, Nebraska, Thursday night, November 10, 1908. The remains were brought to Emerson Saturday, night and the funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church of that, place, Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. B. Linn. It was largely attended for Mr. McKown had a wide circle of friends all over the east end of the county. Mr. McKown was born in Elizabeth, Penn., August 20, 1842. When twelve years of age he came with his parents to this state. He later removed to Monnmouth, Ill., where in 1862 he enllsted in Company C of tbe 83rd Illinois infantry, He went to the front under Captain L. B. Cutler and Colonel A. 0. Harding, the troops proceeding to Fort Ilineman, Ky., on the Tennessee river, and the first important engagement he participated in was at Fort Donelson. Subsequently he was with his company in guerrilla service through Kentucky and Tennessee, being thus engaged until the cessation of hostilities. In that manner of warfare his regiment had frequent conficts with General Joe Wheeler's men and the troops under other noted southerner leaders and the service which fell to the lot of the 83rd Illinois was of a very arduous nature. At Nashville, TN. Mr. McKown was mustered out on June 24, 1865 and on the 8th of July he received an honorable discharge. After the war he joined his family in Iowa and about 35 years ago came to this section, locating near Emerson where he lived some sixteen or eighteen years and then came to Hastings where he lived about fourteen years more. For a number of years he was in the mercantile business in Emerson with the Wests where he gained a wide acquaintance. After coming to Hastings Ne. Was appointed Postmaster holding that position until his resignation in 1903. After that he moved to Harlan where he lived for a couple of years and then went to Cumings County, Nebr., where their sons lived and where he made his home until his death. For several months past he has been in very poor health but his death was hardly looked for so soon. He visited here the past fall and seemed to enjoy very much being with his old friends. He was married in 1868 to Miss Margaret Carver, who survives him. To this union was born 13 children of whom 9 survive him. C. of Knox County, Illinois, Mrs. Fanny Fewsom of Pueblo, Colorado, and Mrs. Flora Severance of Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. McKown was a member of the Milton Summers Post G.A.R. of Malvern. He and his wife were organizers of the First Presbyterian Church in Emerson. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church. He was a staunch Republican, casting his first vote for Abraham Lincoln for president. He was a man of genial kindly ways who made friends of all who ever knew him. He was ever interested in the matters pertaining to the wellfare of the community in which he lived and always public spirited. The news of his demise is received with genuine sorry by all who knew him. Mrs. McKown and daughter Ada and all the sons were present at the funeral services. F. S. and C. R. and M. H. Patterson of Harlan and Howard Wright of Oskaloosa, nephews of Mr. McKown were also present at the funeral. The family desires us to extend their gratitude and sincere thanks to their many old friends who lent them such kind assistance and sympathy in their hour of sorry. Malvern Leader, November 12, 1908
