Tipton Advertiser: 12 Mar 1891 At his home in this city, Saturday, 28 Feb 1891, John B. Shaffer, aged 71, 10 months, and 3 days...born 25 Apr 1819, in New Jersey. Removed to Ohio in 1848, from which place he came and settled in Virginia Grove, Cedar Co., IA, in 1851, and after a residence of 12 years, he removed to York Prairie, where he lived on his farm 28 years, and amassed a large fortune by diligence and honesty in business. About 18 months ago he was stricken down with a disease which confined him to his room most of the time, but through all those tedious months, he evinces great patience and seemed submissive to the will of God. In the month of Jan. last he was taken to the town of Tipton where on the 27th of Feb. surrounded by his sorrowing family he passed beyond that bourne whence no traveler returns. His wife with her two dear boys now left to mourn his loss, ministered to his wants with watchful care until his departure. His funeral was attended by a very large concourse of people, both from the town and country, which evinced the high regards in which he was held by the community. And his remains were interred in Wrights burial ground, awaiting the resurrection on the last day. The sermon was preached by Rev. W. H. Dyer of Inland, who chose for his text part of the 52 verse of the 15th chaper of the 1st Epistle to Corinthians. Rev. D. Sheffer assisting in the other parts of the service. The M.E. choir, of Tipton conducted the singing in a very impressive manner.
