Read More	SOURCE: THE MONTICELLO EXPRESS…..MAY 19, 1927….PAGE 7 DEATH OF JOHN B BROKENS John B Brokens of Wayne Township died at his home last Tuesday evening at 10 o'clock. He had been in ill health during the past sixteen years with carcinoma of the chin and throat. This dreadful disease became worse during the past two years and confined him to his sick room, where he suffered untold pain. He was tenderly cared for during his illness by his wife and children. Mr. Brokens was born in Hesel, Ostfriesland, Germany, August 27, 1859. He was therefore 67 years, 8 months and 21 days old at the time of his death. He was a son of the late Michael and Angetta (Menken) Brokens. During his young manhood he attended the schools of that country and was confirmed in the Lutheran church March 29, 1874, at Reepsholt, Germany. He was married to Minnie Christine Saathoff, October 31, 1883. One daughter was born to this union in Germany. The family immigrated to the United States in 1887, and settled in Wayne Township. Mr. and Mrs. Brokens became the parents of three daughters: Anna, the wife of John Stadtmueller; Etta, the wife of Louis Stadtmueller, both of Castle Grove Township and Lena the wife of John Fechtman, who lives on the home farm. In addition to these daughters and his wife, he is survived by four grandchildren, and two brothers: Henry of Brock, Nebraska, and Michael of Talmadge, Nebraska. The brothers are expected to attend the funeral. The funeral services were held this afternoon at 12:30, at the family home and at 1 o'clock at the church. Both services ere in charge of Rev. J.Willms, pastor of that church. Burial will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Throughout his life Mr. Brokens followed the vocation of a farmer. When his daughter, Mrs. Fechtman, was married in 1920, he built a new home on his farm in Wayne Township, and since that time he and his wife have lived there. He was a hardworking, honest man, who made many friends who will remember him for his integrity and uprightness.
