Description	:	John C. "Jack" Simmon, 86, of Kearney, died February 2, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE. Jack was born July 24, 1925, in Geneva to Harry and Gertrude (O'Brien) Simmon. On May 22, 1951, he married Dorothy Czenkusch in Amherst. Jack graduated from Miller High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served on a destroyer escort in the Pacific during World War II. Read More	John C. "Jack" Simmon, 86, of Kearney, died February 2, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE. Jack was born July 24, 1925, in Geneva to Harry and Gertrude (O'Brien) Simmon. On May 22, 1951, he married Dorothy Czenkusch in Amherst. Jack graduated from Miller High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served on a destroyer escort in the Pacific during World War II. After his service in the Navy, Jack attended Creighton University in Omaha for two years and then earned his bachelor's degree from Detroit University. Jack then worked at the Army depot in Sidney. In 1959, Jack and his wife and three children moved to Italy, then Germany, Michigan and Virginia twice as he pursued a career as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army. At age 60, Jack retired and moved back with Dorothy to Kearney to be close to family. Jack took up golf and enjoyed playing at Buffalo Ridge Golf Course, where he had a hole-in-one. He also found time to volunteer, driving cancer patients to treatment and working at the immunization clinic and as a teacher in the adult literacy program. Jack was a member of St. James Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic minister, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Jack was preceded in death by: parents and an infant brother. Survivors are: wife; son, Jim Simmon and his wife, Jill, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.; daughters, Susan Dodge and her husband, Steve, of Jackson, Mich., and Mary Spoth and her husband, Robert, of Woodbridge, Va.; grandchildren, Katie Spoth, Patrick Spoth, Kevin Spoth, Kyle Spoth, James Dodge, Kathryn Dodge, Lindsay Hill and Shelby Rademaker; and three great-grandchildren. Burial was in the Stanley Cemetery, Amherst, NE. Military rites will be provided at the grave by the Miller American Legion Post #351 and U.S. Navy Military funeral honors team.
