Gentleman and athlete, he was a man of great character, compassion and reverence for life; devoted to and much beloved by his family, who will miss him deeply. John was born May 20, 1914, in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Alexis Hunter Leys and Sallie Frances Duval Carroll; and by his sisters, Marion Duval Leys and Frances Leys Horner. He is survived by his brother, Charles Hunter Leys and by his niece, Marion Horner Barksdale. He is also survived by his three children, Carroll Leys Langston and husband, Jeff, their daughter Sallie, her husband, Andy Batchelor and their son, Langston; as well as his son, John Fuller Leys; his daughter, Alexis Hunter Leys and husband, Guy Domingo.Among John's happiest days were those spent at Lynchburg's E.C. Glass High School, where he will be inducted posthumously into the Hall of Fame. At the University of Virginia in 1935 he was named Captain of the football team and All-America Honorable Mention. At his death, John was the oldest Captain of a UVa athletic team, still holding the record for Longest Plays/Receptions: a 97-yard touchdown against Navy. While at UVa, John met the love of his life, Martha Howell Fuller, the beautiful Atlanta belle to whom he was devotedly married for over 73 years. After college, John played professional football for the Richmond Arrows; worked for the Lynchburg Foundry until Pearl Harbor, then enlisted in the Navy. During the Normandy Invasion John was Commander of Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) 510, landing thousands of troops on Omaha Beach on D-Day during the Allied assaults. In 2013 he received the French Legion of Honor medal for his service. John and Martha raised their family in Waynesboro, where for 45 years John was purchasing agent for the textile firm of Crompton-Shenandoah, vestryman at St. John's Episcopal Church, and an active member of the City Planning Commission. After retirement, John and Martha spent 16 happy years at University Village in Charlottesville. The family is most grateful for the skill and dedication of John's caregivers who provided him a dignified and peaceful end of days: Hospice of the Piedmont, Esther Allen, Clara White, Hilda Massie. The family wishes especially to thank Fannie Martin for her unending loyalty and affection.nA family service will be held in Lynchburg at The Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911 would be most appreciated.
