Description	:	The family of Martha Fuller Leys announces with deep sadness that she peacefully passed away at home on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Martha was born on June 25, 1917, to a family who traced its Huguenot origins to 14th century France and Italy and included a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Fuller of Beaufort, South Carolina, and Martha Howell Fuller of Charlotte, North Carolina; and by her brother and sister, Thomas Fuller of Atlanta and Elizabeth Prioleau Fuller Valk of Winston-Salem. Martha was born on June 25, 1917, to a family who traced its Huguenot origins to 14th century France and Italy and included a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Fuller of Beaufort, South Carolina, and Martha Howell Fuller of Charlotte, North Carolina; and by her brother and sister, Thomas Fuller of Atlanta and Elizabeth Prioleau Fuller Valk of Winston-Salem. Living in Atlanta until she attended National Cathedral School for Girls, Martha also attended Hollins College, transferring to Sweet Briar College after meeting the love of her life, John Carroll Leys of Lynchburg, to whom she was devotedly married for over 73 years. John and Martha raised their three children in Waynesboro, Virginia, and lived there themselves for 45 years. Martha loved beauty and excellence and was herself a great beauty and an artist. An active member of the Waynesboro community, Martha was Chairman of the Board of the Waynesboro Library for many years, and headed the Altar Guild at St. John's Episcopal Church. She belonged to several garden clubs, was an ace bridge player, and for years painted lithographs for Virginia Metalcrafters, many of which hang today at Farmington and the Boar's Head. She taught young people Shakespeare, French and modeling, and was a consummate scholar of 16th century English and French monarchy, adding valuable research to the field. In 1996, John and Martha moved to University Village in Charlottesville, which became beloved home and community to them and to their family. Martha greatly valued her friendships at University Village and daily appreciated the beauty of her surroundings there. She always valued the kind and talented attentions of the staff of both University Village and Village Catering. University Village remains home to Martha's beloved husband, John. Martha is also survived by her brother-in-law, Charles Leys of Lynchburg; her daughter, Carroll Leys Langston and her husband, Jeff Langston, of Charlottesville, and their daughter, Sallie Langston Batchelor and her husband, Andrew Batchelor, of Andover, Massachusetts; Martha and John's son, John Fuller Leys of New Bern, North Carolina; their daughter, Alexis Hunter Leys and her husband, Guy Domingo, of Barboursville and France; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Martha's family especially wishes gratefully to thank Sylvia and Arthur Tyree and their daughter, Kristina, Julia Walker, and Michelle and Betty Key, as well as the wonderful staff of Hospice of the Piedmont for their skilled, devoted and tender care of Martha. Martha's absence will touch the lives of many. She will always be loved and cherished. A private graveside burial will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Lynchburg Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date at University Village in Charlottesville.
