Another sad and distressing fatality occurred last Saturday when Cecil, the 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Marker, residing in Locust Valley, at the foot of South Mountain, [near Burkittsville], fell 35 feet from the top of a pear tree and was so terribly injured that he died following the removal of his arm at the Maryland University hospital, Baltimore, shortly before midnight Tuesday night. The young man climbed the tree, unknown to his parents, and began to shake the pears off. In doing so he lost his balance and fell to the ground. He was picked up by his father and brother, William, who carried him to the house and Dr. A. A. Lamar was summoned. The arm was broken in two places between the elbow and wrist and the bones came through and ran into the ground. Dr. Lamar realized that the injury was serious and fearing lockjaw, took every precaution. On Monday there developed a rare and fatal infection, known to the medical profession as "gas bacillus," a germ that comes from the ground and infects wounds. This bacillus was encountered when the broken bones, protruding through the skin, ran into the ground. The arm began swelling up like a balloon and Dr. Lamar at once realized the hopelessness of the case. Arrangement were made at once to take the unfortunate youth to the Maryland University hospital in Baltimore. At 9 o'clock Monday night the start was made in an automobile from the Model Garage, Mr. S. Leslie Shafer at the wheel. Dr. Lamar and the young man's father and brother, William, accompanied the lad. The trip was made in safety, the hospital being reached shortly after midnight. The case was only the third of the kind ever seen at the hospital and while the surgeons did not believe there was any hope, the lad's arm was amputated at the shoulder. He stood the operation well, but at 6 o'clock Tuesday evening he suffered a sinking spell and death came shortly before midnight. In such a condition was the body of the unfortunate lad that it had to be placed in a hermetically sealed casket. It was shipped to Boonsboro in charge of Undertaker Wm. Bast, arriving there at 9 o'clock Wednesday night. It was taken to the home of the lad's grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. A. W. Philhour, and on Thursday morning was brought to the home of his parents. Here brief services will be held this (Friday) morning, at 9 o'clock, by Rev. H. W. Zuse, of the U. B. Church, Myersville, after which the body will be conveyed to the U. B. Church at Boonsboro, where funeral services [and interment] will be held. Misfortune has been hovering over the Marker family for over a year past, and Mrs. Marker, a daughter and one son are just now about over a long spell of sickness due to fresh paint at their home poisoning them over a year ago. For a long while all of them were unable to walk, being paralyzed. The son is not yet fully recovered, but is able to walk about. Mr. Marker and family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
