John Meister, respected resident of Butler county for 40 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. P. M. Zegers, at Garrison, on Wednesday, March 12. He was in his 84th year. He had been in failing health for three years. Funeral services were held at St. Francis church, Center township, on Friday, March 14., at 10 a.m., Rev. Father O'Sullivan officiating. The pallbearers were John Cidlik, Joe DeWispelaere, James Kirby, Mike Kozisek, Joe Mazanec and John Witkowski. Interment was in St. Francis cemetery, beside the grave of his wife, who died December 19, 1916. Born in Springfield, Ill., in 1840, Mr. Meister's boyhood was passed in Illinois. In 1868, in Illinois, he was united in marriage to Margaret Deboys. To them were born twelve children, nine daughters and three sons,, of whom 10 are living. They are Mrs. Henry DeFord and Mrs. Frank Helgoth of David City, Mrs. Frank Selzer of Bellwood, Mrs. Emma Aden of Hemet, Calif., Mrs. F. M. Wagner of Elkhart, Ind., Mrs. Robert Brown of Gresham, and Mrs. P. M. Zegers, Mrs. William Zegers, Miss Caroline Meister and John F. Meister of Garrison. Two sons, Anton and George, preceded their father in death. In 1879 Mr. Meister came to Nebraska with his family in a covered wagon from Woodford county, ill., and located near Crete, where they resided for two years and then moved to Holt county, residing there two years, and then moved to Columbus. After a short time in Columbus Mr. Meister and family moved to Bellwood in 1884, where Mr. Meister had a blacksmith shop. In 1890 Mr. Meister became a resident of Garrison, residing there till the time of his death. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic church. He was a member also of the Modern Woodmen of America fraternal order. Besides the children who are living, Mr. Meister is survived by 27 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, also by three brothers, George and Jacob Meister of Peoria, Ill., and Adam Meister, of Scotia, Neb., and one sister, Mrs. Hopp, of Peoria, Ill. Coming from outside Butler county to attend the funeral were Mrs. Robert Brown and daughter, Alice, from Gresham, daughter and granddaughter of Mr. Meister, Adam Meister from Scotia, brother of the deceased, George Esiminger and Tony Esiminger from Humphrey, nephews of Mr. Meister, and the families of Messrs.
