Read More	25 December 1884 - The Tipton Advertiser John Charles Ripley Dead, At the residence of his parents, in Tipton, on Monday, Dec. 22, 1884, John Charles Ripley, aged twenty-two years, one month and twenty-one days. He was born in Tipton, Iowa, in the house where he died. As a child he was kind and obedient and early showed a studious disposition. At the age of sixteen he left the public school, where he had been very successful in pursuing his studies. Mr. Scott was Principal of the school at the time of his retirement and greatly regretted its necessity, expressing also his thorough appreciation of Charlie's earnest nature. In one year more he would have graduated. His sound judgment and practical good sense made him a leader, looked up to and confided in by his school-mates. For nine months after leaving school he worked in Mr. Reichart's Hardware Store. This was followed by a year in the Post-office, when Mr. Shaw was Postmaster. His health had been gradually failing him and he was at last compelled to abandon any regular employment. This he greatly regretted, but was full of courage and determination and tried everyway to help his father and aid in whatever he could do. But for this earnestness of purpose he would probably have sooner died. When his brothers were taken sick he tenderly and constantly watched over them. For four weeks all day and half the night he was near them to meet their every want and wish. The constant strain told upon his already weakened frame. About three weeks ago he was himself taken with the fever-truly a martyr to his faithfulness and brotherly love. The complication of diseases bore him rapidly down, and Monday morning at ten minutes past seven he quietly breathed his last. Four days after the passing of his younger brother, James Earl Ripley. Charlie was never addicted to any bad habits, walking uprightly always. He had the courage of strong convictions. He was tender-hearted and very kind. His brothers had a large share of his affection. When sick he wanted to know that his brother as waited upon before he would taste food himself. He often spoke of him and seemed more anxious about him than himself. He had a patient spirit. No murmurs escaped his lips. His tasks in life were always done uncomplainingly. The funeral took place from the Methodist church, Tuesday; at 1:30 P.M., with Burial in the Tipton Masonic Cemetery. And now, God comfort the bereaved, sustain the sorrowing, heal the sick and teach us all to be prepared for death.
