John Chiles Kitt was born in Indiana of Holland ancestry. He married Sarah Lucretia Mead on April 5,1877 in Webster County, Iowa and lived in part of his folks' house until 1892 when he came to Nebraska to look for a home. He bought out a relinquishment from Tom Very south of Wauneta, Nebraska. It had a one room soddy on it and a hand-dug well. In the spring of 1893 he moved the family, which was himself, his wife and eight children: Truman, Will, Omar, Mary, John, Ray, Lee, and Vearl (a baby at that time). He brought all he had with him in an immigrant car, he and the three oldest boys came with the immigrant car, while Sarah and the five children later came on the train. They lived in the neighbors' extra house, which was north and east, until they had their house built. Their new home was a frame house with two big rooms downstairs and the whole upstairs unfinished. There was one bed in the living room downstairs and four beds upstairs. Their last child and daughter, Clara was born in 1897 in their new home in Nebraska. There were several bad years. Omar went back to Iowa and stayed with Grandpa Kitt and worked. John C. and the other older boys went West to find work and to send money home for the family.
