The Cherokee Democrat - Wednesday, February 24th, 1897 - John Christian Peters, who may rightfully be called one of the old settlers of Cherokee county, died at his home in Pitcher township on Monday, Feb. 23, at about 11 o'clock a.m. Mr. Peters had been afflicted for a good many years with a kidney trouble and has been almost constantly under the care of a physician, although only at times has he been unable to look after his affairs on the farm. The trouble grew upon him until finally there was no relief and for several weeks he has been confined to his home. The end came somewhat suddenly, though not unexpected by him or his family, and he expressed himself as being "ready to cross the river." As near as we can learn the deceased came to Cherokee county some twenty two years ago. He first lived in Tilden township, then on a place near the poor farm, and about eighteen years ago moved to the farm in Pitcher township. In his younger days he was a Mississippi steamboat man, and we recall many yarns he has told of his life on the river. In addition to his sickness he has had a good deal of hard luck. He was one of the victims of the great cyclone a few years ago, his home being devastated and he being badly injured. But he has been a hard worker, a good financier, and leaves a good home for his family. His neighbors say he was as honest as any man could be, was splendid neighbor and a good friend. The deceased was 61 years of age. He leaves a wife and nine children, the oldest a son of 22 years of age. The funeral will take place today and the remains laid to rest in Good Hope cemetery.
