According to that census he was born January 1848 in Ireland, came to the United States in 1851, and was employed as a freight agent for the railroad. ````````````````````````````````` Seward Independent-Democrat (Seward, Nebr.), March 7, 1929, p. 1, col. 6 JOHN CONROY'S FUNERAL SERVICES HELD SATURDAY Funeral services over the remains of John Conroy, for many years a resident of Seward, were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John McGowen, north of Ulysses, Saturday forenoon, and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery south of that place. The deceased was about 84 years of age and is survived by three children, Mrs. McGowen, the daughter, of Ulysses, Will Conroy of Lincoln, a Burlington freight conductor, and Edward, who lives somewhere in California, but has not been located. Four children are dead. Mr. Conroy was born in Ireland, and came to America with his parents when a child. A brother younger than himself died during the voyage across the ocean, and was buried at sea. The family first settled at Amboy, near Peoria, Ill., where his father was drowned in the river. Mr. Conroy removed to Nebraska about 49 years ago. For 35 years he was freight foreman at the Burlington depot, his period of service extending from 1885 to 1920, when he was retired on a pension. A year ago last December he sustained a broken hip as a result of a fall while crossing the Burlington tracks near his home, and he never recovered from this injury. On June 30, 1928, his wife died, after which he went to live with his daughter at Ulysses. The funeral services Saturday were in charge of Rev. Fr. Laughran and were largely attended. Among those who went from Seward were Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Payne, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Conley and daughter, Mabel, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Imig, J. F. Geesen and Henry McHale. ````````````````````````````````` Ulysses Dispatch (Ulysses, Nebr.), March 7, 1929, p. 1, col. 6 OBITUARY John Conroy Mr. John Conroy, aged 84 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. F. McGowen, Thursday morning, February 28, 1929, following an attack of the flu. Mr. Conroy has been an invalid for over a year, but bore his sufferings patiently and cheerfully, ever thoughful for those around him. He came to Nebraska 50 years ago all of which time was spent in Seward, with the exception of the last four months. He was a retired railroad veteran having worked for the C. B. & Q. at Seward for 41 years. He leaves to mourn his loss, two sons, E. J. Conroy, of Oakland, Calif., W. H. Conroy of Lincoln, and one daughter, Mrs. J. F. McGowen of Ulysses; seven grand children and two great grandchildren, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by Father Loughran at the Catholic church at Ulysses, Nebraska, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock after which the body was laid to rest in St. Marys Catholic cemetery, beside his wife, who preceded him in death eight months ago. _________ CARD OF THANKS We wish to extend our sincere thanks, to all our friends for the sympathy and kindness shown during our recent bereavement occasioned by the death of our dear father.
