A telegram was received Tuesday morning announcing the death in a hospital in Topeka of John Cook of Rice, known to a large circle of friends as Uncle John. His death followed two operations which he was compelled to undergo. Mr. Cook was 75-years-of-age and one of the county's oldest and most highly respected citizens. He was the father of Charles Cook of this city, William and Jason Cook of Rice and Mrs. Theo Taylor; his wife also survives. The remains of Mr. Cook came in Tuesday evening and were taken on to Rice where the funeral occurred yesterday. Concordia Empire 26 Jun, 1902: Obituary -- John Cook was born in New Madrid, East Tennessee, June 22, 1827. He died June 9, 1902, at Topeka, Kansas, where he had gone to undergo an operation. He had been afflicted for several years, but was always patient and uncomplaining and few realized his real condition. The deceased was an early settler in this county, having come from Illinois. He was well-known and respected in the vicinity of Rice. He was a good citizen and his departure is regretted by the entire community. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for over 50 years and when in health was faithful to its services; but for the past few years due to his peculiar affliction he has been deprived of these privileges. Only a few days before his death he expressed to the writer his faith in God and the desire that he might be done and a short time before his death he prayed that Jesus would take him. His three sons and granddaughter, Miss Iva Cook, were with him and ministered to him in his sickness at Topeka. He was three times married; he leaves a wife and six children. His sons are William and Jason Cook of Rice, Charles Cook of Concordia; daughters are Mrs. Mary Worthington of Rice, Mrs. Addie Taylor and Mrs. Laura Barlett, south of Concordia. The body was brought home to Rice on Tuesday and the funeral took place Wednesday afternoon at the Rice church. It was conducted by the pastor. A large concourse attended the service.
