Expired Saturday After Only Short Illness - Blood poisoning from an unknown cause proved fatal Saturday evening, July 9 to John Carstens of west Hayes township. Mr. Carstens face began swelling several days previously from what appeared to be an insect bite on the side of his face. A physician was consulted, but the trouble did not abate and continued to spread over his face. He was removed Friday to Ida Grove hospital, where he died at 6:30 the following evening. Mr. Carstens funeral was held Monday in charge of his pastor, Rev. K Keilhorn of Schleswig. Brief services at the home were followed by public services in Friedens Evangelical church in Schleswig. Burial was made in Morgan cemetery. John Carstens was born June 2, 1876 at Davenport, Iowa, and lived to the age of 56 years, one month and 7 days. When he was four months old, his parents moved to Otter Creek township, Crawford county. He was confirmed April 10 1892 at Grant township Lutheran church. He was married December 1, 1896 to Miss Adelia Schlotfeldt at Davenport. He farmed for a while two miles south of Ida Grove and then moved on the home place, where he resided thirty years. To mourn his loss he leaves his wife and six children: Adele, now Mrs. Johannes Johannsen, Kiron; Lilly, now Mrs. Ed Debbe [Deppe], Ida Grove; Hilda, at home; Edward at Arthur; Adolph, Ida Grove; Herman at home. There also survive him, one brother, Herman Carstens of Battle Creek, and five sisters, Mrs. John Hauschildt, Danbury; Mrs. Mat Grell, Mapleton, Mrs. F. Grell, Sioux City; Mrs. Carl Schwartz, Schleswig; Mrs. Frank Wiegel, Ida Grove. Also his aged mother, Mrs. John Carstens, of Schleswig and nine grandchildren.
