Goldhahn Jr., 90, of Fort Benton, an Army veteran who farmed and ranched in the Geraldine area until retiring, died of natural causes Friday at Peace Hospice in Great Falls. Goldhahn of Missoula; brothers Henry Goldhahn (Ruth) of Cascade and Jim Goldhahn (Jean) of Geraldine; a sister, Elizabeth Tschache of Bozeman; and sisters-in-law Ethel Goldhahn and Elizabeth Goldhahn of Fort Benton and Mary Roberts Jones (Tom) of Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; a son, Robert; brothers Harold, Charles and Robert; and a sister, Lillian Anderson. John was born in Fort Benton, Mont., on March 31, 1914, to John and Rose Goldhahn of Geraldine. He grew up and went to school in Geraldine, graduating in 1932, and worked at farming and ranching in the area until the war. He left with the second contingent out of Chouteau County in March. 1942, and received basic training at Sheppard Field, Texas, joining the 305th Bomb Group at Salt Lake City, Utah. After training, the group arrived in England in September, 1942. He was a crew chief on B-17s until returning home in April, 1944. He then joined the 330th Bomb Group and was crew chief on a B-29 going to Guam in February, 1945. He stayed in Guam until after the war. Returning home in November of 1945, he was discharged at East Base, now Malmstrom AFB, in Great Falls. John and Margaret Roberts were married in Russell, Kan., on Nov. 24, 1944. After the war, they farmed and ranched in the Geraldine area. They were active in school and church activities, and John was a life member of the V.F.W. In 1980, they retired from farming and ranching and moved to Sapphire Village, where they were active in arts, crafts, and digging for Yogo sapphires.They moved back to Geraldine in 1998. Memorials are suggested to the Sunrise Bluffs Estates in Fort Benton, MT; or a charity of the donor's choice. Originally published in Great Falls Tribune February 13, 2005
