Born born in Union, on February 20, 1930, he was a son of the late John David Long, II and Mary (Baker) Mann and Stephen W. Mann, Jr., his step-father. Born born in Union, on February 20, 1930, he was a son of the late John David Long, II and Mary (Baker) Mann and Stephen W. Mann, Jr., his step-father. A 1947 graduate of Union High School, he graduated from University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1951. In 1953, Mr. Long received his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law and returned to Union, where he practiced law. He served as Union County Solicitor from 1961 to 1964. Mr. Long served in the South Carolina State Senate from 1967 to 1980 and received the Order of the Palmetto in 1978 from then Governor James B. Edwards. Mr. Long served his country for two years in the 101st Airborne Division and retired as a Lt. Col. Judge Advocate General Corp. U.S. Army Reserve. He was a member of the Union Elks Lodge #1321, 32nd Degree Mason, the Hejaz Shrine Temple, and Tabernacle Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Lou Ann (Long) Parris of Spartanburg and Mary Jane (Long) Farr of Union; two sons, Billy Long of Union and Stephen Long of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, Toney "Tee" Farr (Stacy) of Jonesville and Neely Parris of Spartanburg; two great-grandchildren, Kylee Wallace of Spartanburg and Will Farr of Jonesville; a brother, Mack Long (Nancy) of Buffalo; two nephews, Michael Long and Matthew Long, both of Buffalo; and an aunt, Connie Parks of Tucson, AZ. Graveside services were held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2005 at Union Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Gideon Long and Rev. George Turbeville. Active Pallbearers were Dr. Gerald Fielder, Eddie Harris, Michael Long, Terry Young, Gregg Robertson, Billy Whitney and Eddie Hines. Members of the Jim Palmer Sunday School Class of Tabernacle Baptist Church and members of the Round Table of the Union Elks Lodge were asked to assemble at the cemetery Thursday morning at 10:45 to form the Honorary Escort.
