Read More	Obituary : Unknown Source "One of Youngest Civil War Vets Passes STRICKEN MEMORIAL DAY AT ALBION HOME Enlisted in Thirteenth Iowa Infantry Before Passing Fourteenth Birthday Participated in Billy Sherman's Famous March to the Sea. J. D. Fraley, a resident of Albion and vicinity for more than seventy years, one of the last two civil war veterans in Albion and one of the youngest veterans of the great rebellion, passed away at 4:25 o'clock this morning at his home in Albion, death being due to uremic poisoning. Mr. Fraley was taken suddenly ill at noon Memorial Day, after having participated in the early exercises incident to the annual celebration and lapsed into unconsciousness; from which he failed to rally. Mr. Fraley was born at Crawfordsville, Ind., March 29, 1850, the son of Charles and Sarah A. Fraley. The family moved to Taylorville, Ill., ·when he was a small boy. The father passed away at Taylorville in 1861, and the mother then brought her children to the home of a sister, Mrs. Hosea Dean east of Albion. Mrs. Fraley passed away there in 1863. Enlists in Fourteenth Year Orphaned at 13 years of age, young John Fraley enlisted for service in the civil war before he had celebrated his fourteenth birthday anniversary. Leaving Albion on foot he went to Davenport where he was enrolled in Company H, Thirteenth Iowa infantry, on Washingoton’s birthday, Feb. 22, 1864. To be accepted he gave his age as 16 years. He was mustered into service March 30, and was sent deep into the confederacy, serving with his company in Alabama. He was in the battles of Jonesboro, East Point and Gaylesville and later his organization joined the famous Crocker Brigade at Goldsboro NC for participation in the march of Sherman’s army to the sea. The Thirteenth Iowa was in the famous march thru Raleigh, Petersburg and Richmond, to its conclusion at Alexandria VA, near Washington. A few days later, Lee having surrendered, the Thirteenth Iowa took part in the triumphal march down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. Discharged at Louisville After the review the regiment remained in camp near Washington until June 7, 1865, when it was conveyed by rail to Parkersburg, Va., and thence by steamer to Louisville, Ky., where young Fraley was mustered out of service with the regiment, July 21, 1865. A few days later the men entrained for Davenport and there, on July 29, the regiment was disbanded and the Iowa boys returned to their homes. Returning to Albion the young soldier attended the old Albion Seminary for a short time. He was married, Feb. 22, 1871, to Miss Ann Hobbs, of Albion, who passed away at their home Nov. 12, 1904. Mr. Fraley was married a second time to Miss Evelyn Spindler, Feb. 3, 1912. Five Children Survive Mrs. Fraley and five children by the first marriage survive. The children are: B. E. Fraley and Mrs. Ralph Arney, of Albion; Bruce Fraley, of Clarence, Mo.; Mrs. A. B. Hixson, of Des Moines, and John Ronald Fraley, of Redondo Beach, Calif. Twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren, a brother, Charles Fraley, of Ashland, Ore., and a sister, Mrs. Lou Newcomer, of Long Beach, Calif., also survive. In 1895 Mr. Fraley moved from his farm cast of Albion to his home in town, where he lived until March, this year, when the home was destroyed by fire. For several years he ran a general store and later a hardware store, under the firm name of Fraley & Son. He retired from active business in 1924. Commander of Thomas Post He was a member of the Albion Methodist church; Damascus lodge. A. F. & A. M., and the 0. E. S., No. 203, of Albion, and at the time of his death was commander of Frank M. Thomas post. G. A. R. of Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the Estel funeral home, in this city, in charge of Rev. E. R. Kildow, pastor of the Albion Methodist church. Burial will be in the family lot in the Albion cemetery. The body will in at the Estel funeral home until time for the funeral and the home will be open to friends from 7 to 9 o’clock Friday night. The Albion Masonic lodge will have charge of the services at the grave at Albion.
