Read More	John Daniel Herrick, the son of Daniel and Abigail Herrick, was born at Nelson, Nebraska, August 21, 1879 and departed this life at Clay Center, Nebraska, October 25, 1943 at the age of 64 years, 2 months and 4 days. He grew to manhood at Nelson and spent most of his life here, until the past four years, when he lived in Colorado. He was united in marriage to Carrie Sylvia Kinnison September 6, 1898, who preceded him in death on April 5th, 1936. He leaves to mourn his passing his only son LaVerne; the daughter-in-law and two granddaughters of Los Angeles, California; also four brothers: George and William of Nelson; Clinton and Ernest of Briggsdale, Colorado; and one sister, Della Buffington of Englewood, Colorado; other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Herrick was reared in a Christian home and in early life he was a member of the United Brethren Church. In 1926, under the pastorate of Rev. Beebe, his membership was transferred to the Nelson Methodist Church, remaining a member of this church until his death. It is often written of Jesus in the Scripture, "As His custom was, he went into the synagogue upon the Sabbath to pray." This tribute was also paid to our brother by his friends. "He was faithful to the church services." The favorite hymn of his mother and also of John was, "Some Sweet Day". Sunset and evening star, And one clear call of me! And may there be no moaning of the bar When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embark: For, though from out our borne of time and place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Nelson October 28 at two o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Clarence V. Powell. Music was furnished by the quartette: James Murphy, E.J. Portwood, Emerson and Lowell Powell. Mrs. H.H. Hite presided at the piano. The body was laid to rest beside his wife in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
