Description	:	John David Downer, age 73, passed away on November 29th in Wichita, KS. He was born September 10, 1945 in Concordia, KS, the son of Roy and Althea (Martin) Downer. John grew up in Concordia and graduated from Concordia High School in 1964. He then attended Pittsburg State University graduating in 1966. In August of that year he married Shirley Elaine Wilkening and they celebrated 51 years of marriage before she passed away in February of this year. He was born September 10, 1945 in Concordia, KS, the son of Roy and Althea (Martin) Downer. John grew up in Concordia and graduated from Concordia High School in 1964. He then attended Pittsburg State University graduating in 1966. In August of that year he married Shirley Elaine Wilkening and they celebrated 51 years of marriage before she passed away in February of this year. Boeing Aircraft in Wichita was where John worked for over 30 years and he spent three of those years in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China producing parts for the 737. His work allowed he and Shirley to travel to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and Europe where they visited their former ASSE Foreign Exchange students. Favorite pastimes for John included being a Boy Scout in Troop 38, Concordia with scout leader, Ray Culley; fishing on the Republican River, and spending time with his two grandchildren, Wylie and Bailey. This summer Wylie became an Eagle Scout at age 14 and John could not have been prouder. John is survived by his son, Joel (Shana) Downer of Douglass; sister Dorothy (Terry) Saddler of Sharon; brother Warren Downer of Oxford; grandchildren Wylie and Bailey; and nieces Jennifer Kohlmeyer and Courtney Downer of Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Shirley Wilkening Downer. Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Kansas Diabetes Association, the Masonic Home of Wichita or charity of choice.
