The body of an unidentified man, apparently 75 years old, and with indications that give officials the theory of suicide, was discovered this morning in the water near the foot of Fourth street by Frank W. Yorke, occupant of houseboat No. 8. Unless the name J. D. Snider carried by the cover of a deposit book of the Seattle Savings & Trust Co., used as a filled band in the dead man's derby hat, shall furnish a clew to identify, officials must seek further for information. It is believed the suicide was an act of within an hour before the body was discovered, as City Clerk Arthur V. McCall believes the man the same as one who inquired how to reach the old dock immediately before location of the body. The hat and cane of the man were found on the dock, indicating that he had deliberately jumped into the bay with a determination of ending his life. The dead man is described as of medium stature, white hair and with a chin beard. No money or other means of helping aid identification was found. DEWEY, FOURTEEN YEARS A RESIDENT, IS BELIEVED MET DEATH BY ACCIDENT AND NOT THROUGH SUICIDE—WAS INDIAN WAR VETERAN. John D. Snider, aged ninety two, was the man who met death in the waters of Port Orchard bay yesterday morning, and whose identity was shrouded in mystery until late yesterday afternoon. The dead man was an uncle of Mrs. George R. Dewey, 714 Concord street, at whose home he had lived for the past thirteen years. Mr. Dewey identified the remains at the Lewis chapel yesterday afternoon, following a search of several hours for the aged relative, who was missing from home. The theory of suicide is not believed correct by Mr. Dewey. He declares that Snider was for years a frequenter of the docks, having been a persistent fisherman. He states that Snider was missed when Mrs. Dewey took a breakfast to a small cabin he occupied at the Dewey home. No complaint of ill health had been made, and so far as is realized there was absolutely no cause for a suicidal act. Mr. Dewey believes his relative fell from the wharf while stricken with dizziness or a like cause. Mr. Snider was a native of Arkansas. He was twice married. Two daughters survive, both living in California, one in Healdsburg. Mr. Snider was more than sixty years a resident of the Northwest, coming here in the late fifties. Conspicuous with his pioneer experiences was participation in the Indian wars of a half century ago. He served a long government employment career as an army farrier. He had made his home in new locations for settlement in the Northwest from Portland to the Canadian border, engaging in farming and general employment. Snider had become most feeble during past few months. Up to a year ago he was most active for one of such advanced age. Until he was ninety he celebrated his birthdays with parties given by his niece, Mrs. Dewey, and as a bit of entertainment for the guests summoned he would stand on his head as a proof of continuing agility and youthfulness. Funeral services will be conducted from the Lewis chapel at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. John D. Snider was born at Cane Hill, Washington county, Arkansas, on March 24, 183O. He left there April 10, 1852, and arrived in Portland by ox team, October 4, 1852. He shoed government horses during the Indian war at Tumwater, Washington. He married Marguerite Jane Frost at Bush Prairie in 1857 and from this union had six children, three of whom are still living and in California. On November 6, 1894, he married Susan Lambly in Seattle. She died June, 1905. He died at the age of 92 years and 12 days and has been taken care of by Mrs. George Dewey for the past 14 years.
