John saw the need for merchandise for the early settlers so he went to Des Moines and brought back items for resale out of his home. This is how he became the first merchant in Exira. John was appointed Postmaster and at that time, the mail came once a week to Exira by the Pony Express. With the previous postmaster, people just picked up their mail themselves from the circle on mail on the floor. John, however, put his in his tall hat and delivered it to the people when he met them. He also wrote letters to his relatives back in Massachusetts and the following year his father, Deacon Lyman Bush joined the community (1857). His father began organizing prayer groups to meet in the settlers' homes. His father then made a trip back to Massachusetts and collected money from his friends there. This is how the the first church in Audubon County, the Federated Church of Christ came to be built. John's wife Laura was a teacher. Since there wasn't a school in the new settlement, she taught children in their home. In 1861, the Civil War had begun. Guerrilla bands had formed and were raiding southern Iowa. When Governor Kirkwood requested volunteers, John, age 36 and his father, Lyman Bush, age 60, enlisted, but neither were in active duty. With the end of the Civil War in 1865, John built a store, the first business building in Exira. He kept a variety of goods, the best that he could obtain. A fire destroyed this building and in spite of towns people's efforts to bucket water to put it out, the fire might have burned the rest of the town except for a pop-up thunderstorm. John rebuilt his store. John and Laura had two children, Henry and Lena Patience. Their children never married. John built a large home for his family in the north part of Exira, near a spring-fed lake, "Lake Lena". Lake Lena was the local swimming hole and picnicking grounds in the summer, skating parties in the winter, and the Creamery's supply of ice for the summer. Exira was the county seat from 1871-1879. John Bush was among the 6 men who built and maintained a suitable courthouse. The building is now on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to the Audubon County Museum. Also on the National Register of Historic Places is the United Church of Christ and John's home.
