He submitted to a surgical operation last November, which disclosed a cancerous condition. The last three weeks he was confined to his bed. Read More	SOURCE: THE MONTICELLO EXPRESS, MONTICELLO, IOWA, APR 14, 1932, PAGE 6 John Dietrich Lurkens, a former resident of Jones county, and well known here, died at Kenyon, Minn., Wednesday, April 6, after a lingering illness of one year. He submitted to a surgical operation last November, which disclosed a cancerous condition. The last three weeks he was confined to his bed. Mr. Lurkens was a son of Heinrich Lurkens and Marie Christine (Buenger) Lurkens. He was born November 13, 1872, at Sued Dunum, Ostfriesland, Germany. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church, and came to America in 1894, and settled in Jones county. He visited the Fatherland in 1900, and on January 26, 1901, he was married to Miss Hilka Margareta Cassens, by Rev. C. Mardorf. He was the father of eleven children, two of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his widow; sons, Henry, John William, Fred and Carl, and daughters, Mrs. Mary Harms and Mrs. Etta Folkers of Wayne township, Mrs. Christine Johnson of Albert Lea, Minn., and Byrdena, residing at home. He also has five surviving sisters, Mrs. Gesche Wachtendorf, Mrs. Marie Janssen, Mrs. Anna Andreesen, all living in Germany, Mrs. Etta Willms of Monticello, and Mrs. Gerhardine Antons of Center Junction. His aged father-in-law, Gerhard Cassens, and five grandchildren survive also. Mr. Lurkens' funeral was held at the Wayne Lutheran church, and was attended by relatives and friends. The funeral, sermon was delivered bv Rev. J. P. Willms, pastor. The decedent was 59 years, 4 months and 24 days old. He was a kind hearted man, and had many friends
